I can't get Madwifi working for the life of me. [UNSOLVED--CLOSED--]

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4807 with Atheros Ar5007.  I've looked at the wiki page for madwifi and still couldn't get it.  I would like to be able to give you more information on what I've tried, but I'm so confused right now I can't.  If anyone has gotten theirs working, please tell me how you did it.

You can't use the current madwifi with AR5007; you have to use ndiswrapper with drivers from www.atheros.cz.

Alternatively, you could try the ath5k driver. It doesn't support my card (AR5007EG) but it might support AR5007.

Re: I can't get Madwifi working for the life of me. [UNSOLVED--CLOSED--]

I did that and when I start ndiswrapper and type iwconfig, I get this output:

lo        no wireless extensions.

eth0      no wireless extensions.

wmaster0  no wireless extensions.

wlan0     IEEE 802.11  ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.412 GHz  Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=27 dBm
          Retry min limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr=2352 B
          Link Quality:0  Signal level:0  Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

My network is protected with a WPA2 personnal password.  Could that have anything to do with it.  Nothing is showing up under wireless networks in gnome network manager.

Personally, I would suggest:

If you're trying to get wireless on a home portel, you can probably change the portal's settings.  If you're not paranoid, you can temporarily set your network to broadcast it's SSID and disable encryption, check if you can connect under those circumstances, and then change it back to WPA encryption.

If that works, then it would seem that ndiswrapper is working, and you just need to figure out if/how to connect to an encrypted network (that might not be broadcasting it's SSID), if it doesn't then ndiswrapper is probably not working and you need to go back and troubleshoot ndiswrapper. or try the athk driver, as Gullible Jones suggested.

I tried it and got nothing.  I guess I'll start from scratch and try again.

Re: I can't get Madwifi working for the life of me. [UNSOLVED--CLOSED--]

I followed the docs in the Archlinux wiki to connect with my Atheros 5008 (using ndiswrapper and wpa_supplicant) to my WPA2-secured network.

Since I'm a believer in the netcfg2-program by Iphitus, I tried to get that to work but I failed miserably. I plan to get that to work when the new ath9k-driver enters the linux-kernel so that I can leave ndiswrapper out of the game.

Zl.

I couldn't get it working, but thanks to all.  I will no longer look back at this forum and am closing it.
