Unable to run physical Windows XP installation from Vmware.

Having some problems with running Windows XP from an existing physical partition in Vmware Workstation. When I try to boot the Windows partition from within Vmware, I get the following on the screen.

     Booting 'Windows XP'

rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

No error message.

Booting into Windows when I start the machine, works fine.

Have followed this guide.
Have tried running Vmware both as normal user and root. No difference.

I'm running latest Vmware version and latest kernel.

Any ideas?

Oerjan

Hmmm.....can't help you with vmware, but I have an existing physical XP installation running great within Virtualbox. I originally set it up within Ubuntu, then moved the configurations to Arch when I started using Arch a couple of weeks ago. I used the tutorial at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=769883 to get it working.

Good luck!

Re: Unable to run physical Windows XP installation from Vmware.

Curse you and your working raw disk VM, firecat53! Hehe. I've been trying to get the same thing running here for a while (via VirtualBox), but without much luck ("Can't mount partition," "Disk read error," "Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart," etc). My T60 is running off a SATA drive, which I've heard can be problematic. Nasty bit of business, for some people at least. Orjanp--good luck. If you find a solution to your issue, please share! It might help me out in my eternal quest...

Re: Unable to run physical Windows XP installation from Vmware.

orjanp, I have it working fine with Vmware... this probably won't help as I have windows on sdb but here is my grub entry for windows...

title Windows XP
       map (hd0) (hd1)
        map (hd1) (hd0)
        rootnoverify (hd1,0)
        makeactive
        chainloader +1
        boot

Re: Unable to run physical Windows XP installation from Vmware.

Thanks.

I have tested with the boot option like forkboy, no change. It won't boot.

So I tested with VirtualBox, and it booted, but only to experience a bluescreen. So perhaps I migrate to VirtualBox.

Re: Unable to run physical Windows XP installation from Vmware.

No, sorry. I get a Disk read error just after chainloader +1. So no luck there either.

But when I use a cd image to skip the grub bootloader and boot directly into Windows XP, I get to the Windows logo screen and then a bluescreen.

Orjanp...
