DVD drive is making crazy sounds!

I'm having a crazy issue with encrypted (ie commercial) DVDs (region 1).  In either VLC or mplayer, the dvd will play for a short while, then will freeze and start making sounds like an old 5 1/4" floppy drive.
I have libdvdread, nav, css installed and am in the right groups.  The DVD drive has always worked in other distros/windoze/etc, I'm not sure what would make it behave this way.

if I run VLC /dev/dvd/ from a command line, I get:

VLC media player 0.8.6i Janus

10 or so seconds of play, then the crunchy noises.  Any ideas?

Re: DVD drive is making crazy sounds!

OK, I feel like a complete doofus.  I neer bothered looking at the surface of the DVD before playing (low light in my office).  So, I tried the novel approach to fixing my issues--I CLEANED THE DISK.
Amazing!  Great playback in VLC and Mplayer.
And here I wanted to find some issue with Arch...
