[arch@root]$ pacman -Sy
:: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirror.isoc.org.il: Connetion timed out
error: failed to synchronize core: Connection timed out

and it fails trying to download 'extra', 'community' an 'unstable'.

OK, my internet connection is fine, and i tried alternative mirrors...

Re: problems updating my system

make sure you have things spelled right in that file, if so just wait for the issue to clear up

Re: problems updating my system

Yogev, have you tried "pacman -Syy" ? or "ping mirror.isoc.org.il"

That mirror of yours is working, check the /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist ( Try the Estonian mirror, maybe that helps )

Re: problems updating my system

i tried 'ping' command and it works just fine, but 'pacman -Syy' gives me the same results.
And the Estonian mirror also doesn't work...

Re: problems updating my system

are you some how blocking that connection?

host.allow host.deny?

was it ever working before? that is very weird indeed.

edit: are you using that command as ROOT? your bash prompt says arch@root, whatever that means, but pacman needs root privelages when doing -S operations.

Re: problems updating my system

my 'hosts.allow' file is empty, and my 'hosts.deny' is:

ALL: ALL: DENY

and i'm using root al the time.

BTW, i can't download files from those servers even with WGET.

Re: problems updating my system

I'm having the same problem, except that it has evolved. Now it can connect to the hosts just fine, but it says the packages are corrupt. I'm guessing it will continue to fix itself.

It is indeed very odd, since I just used pacman yesterday and haven't changed any system settings at all.

EDIT: Okay, so now it fixed itself. Just as I thought. I'm working fine now.

Re: problems updating my system

i have problems right now too, when i do a "-Syu" it says

:: Synchronizing package databases...

but nothing happend, it just stay there, and after few minutes it says

error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from ftp.archlinux.org : Connection timed out

i changed the /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist commenting the first mirror but it's the same...

Re: problems updating my system

Hi All.

I too am having the same problem as yogev.
This is directly after a fresh install, so it has never worked for me.
I can browse the web via links and can ping google.com, but I am unable to update the db.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: problems updating my system

Try running pacman -Syy then pacman -Su.  Also, what mirror are you using?  Check the mirror status here:  http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=46938.

Re: problems updating my system

Thanks for the replies.

I managed to get it working.
For what it is worth...I picked a mirror from the mirror list, activated it and pinged that address.
When I pinged it, it responded and then I ran pacman directly after and it worked.

Don't have a clue why or what though.
