I installed google-earth from AUR and it runs terribly on my otherwise well performing machine. I have a dual 2.4ghz p4 box and starting the app spikes the second cpu to 100% but leaves the other nearly idle. Stock kernel, decent ATI card (not at home at the moment so I dont have the model) that runs video really well. Two gigs of ram in there too. Htop shows googleearth-bin running about 40 times, but I'm not sure how to interpret that since top shows it only once.
Thanks

AFAICT thats a Graphicdriver problem. I guess Google Earth needs Hardware acceleration. Have you installed the proprer ATI driver?
Otherwise check out http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI and try again. Hope this helps.

OK this is solved. The problem is specific to the open source ati driver.
Install driconf from AUR
Go to application settings and add a new application.
Give the application a name
Make the executable "googleearth-bin"
Go to the add setting option for the application and add "disable low-impact fallback", set this to true.
Where is a suitable place to put this in the wiki?

I guess this fits:

Ok, seems quiet more complicated than just installing the driver. Good job! Sorry, my post wasnt very useful, but I thought it would be a good start to look at the driver (cause you never said that other 3D Software runs fine). Have a nice day!

But this doesn't work with every ATI card! I tried it once, didn't change a thing. But that was a while ago, I'll try it again later this day. What I want to say is, it would help to provide working and not working cards in this section of the wiki. So btartsa, what card do you have?
