Strange beeping

Hi,

I wasn't sure which group to put this in but I eventually decided on x64. I am running arch x64 with gnome (2.2.2?) and I am having a strange problem happening. I have my own suspicion of what is happening but I would like an additional opinion.

For months now I have been occasionally hearing a "beep beep beep" coming from my speakers. It appears to be happening while gnome is in screensaver mode. It doesn't happen that often... I might hear it once a day. My suspicion is that the system is trying to go to sleep (set to go to sleep after 1 hour inactive) and it is failing to do this and giving me some strange set of beeps to let me know that it has failed. And I just noticed this in the /var/log/messages.log

Aug 27 23:14:55 softcore gnome-power-manager: (dldiamond) suspend failed
Aug 27 23:14:55 softcore gnome-power-manager: (dldiamond) Resuming computer
Aug 27 23:14:55 softcore gnome-power-manager: (dldiamond) hibernate failed

Anyone know for sure if this is what is causing the problem and what I might be able to do about it aside from turning off suspend. I would prefer for it to work. Thanks for any help provided.

An addition.... I just noticed a couple of other lines above the ones I mentioned. They are as follows:

Aug 27 23:14:55 softcore gnome-power-manager: (dldiamond) Suspending computer. Reason: System idle.
Aug 27 23:14:55 softcore gnome-power-manager: (dldiamond) cannot suspend as not allowed from policy

Hmmm, should dldiamond be in a specific group to allow him to suspend the system?

Re: Strange beeping

Try adding it to the 'power' group.

Re: Strange beeping

I went looking in /etc/group and that did seem to be the only appropriate solution. I have added this user to the group. Now I just have to confirm whether or not it is working. I guess I could shorten the hibernate time to a minute or so.

Re: Strange beeping

Under power management preferences I just noticed that there is a checkbox for use sound to notify in event of an error. I guess I have my answer.
