[SOLVED] 3d games pause periodically

Hi there

I'm having an issue in games at least since catalyst 8.7 (I don't want to revert to catalyst 8.6 or lower since i would have to downgrade the kernel as well). I'm currently running catalyst 8.8 on my mobility radeon 9600 and whenever I play games (in my kdemod4 or ratpoison wm) the game gets stuck every few minutes. The screen freezes and sound stops playing for some seconds. Then the game continues running. I've got this problem now in UT2004 (AlienSwarm mod) and Enemy Territory: Quake wars.

I think I have pretty much exactly the same problem as you. First I thought it was a problem with 2D rendering, because the freezes mostly happened in 3D games with lots of 2D sprites, but after further testing it seems that it's the same with pretty much every game, and compiz. I made another thread in the newbie corner (before finding this thread):

I too would appreciate some help on this issue.

I'm not sure if this is the exact problem you're talking about but try adding "nopat" to your kernel line in Grub.  Mine looks like this now:

ktitle Arch Linux
root (hd0,0)
initrd /boot/kernel26.img
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk vga=791 ro nopat
initrd /boot/kernel26.img

This fixes a pause I get every few seconds with the new driver.

I would like to note that I was experiencing the same issue on my system, which has a Geforce 9600GT (173 drivers) and the aforementioned fix helped with that as well!

Clearly this isn't just a catalyst issue.
