Re: I know this is XP could Arch look something like this...?

This thread might help? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=195319

I don't use GNOME at the moment, as I am focusing 100% on Openbox.

For displaying text files on your desktop check out root-tail or xosd (osd_cat), usually used for log files, but could serve for this purpose (and may be more suited than conky).

You need to install an RTFM interface.

root-tail would do the trick very console like [nothing wrong with that!] conky should be ok .... if I can tame it :-)

Re: I know this is XP could Arch look something like this...?

Ok so I added the following to .conkyrc

${head /home/mrgreen/tasks.txt 30 20}

when run I got

Conky: head logfile does not exist, or you do not have correct permissions

path is right file name is right

grrrrrr!

I got it working. Double check the path thoroughly, it also gave me problems..and try the 777 trick. Conky will update the display as you put more text into the file big_smile

That's text.txt not tasks.txt

${head /home/mrgreen/tasks.txt 30 20}
