External Harddrive wierdness.

First of all, in this instance, I'm running ubuntu.  I apologize, but its on an imac g4, and was much easier and seemed more up to date than archppc.

So, the problem.  I've got an external usb drive that I've successfully mounted many times before.  However, on this g4, I can't find it under fdisk -l.  However, it does show up in lsusb.

The thing is, the drive mounts.  It mounts automatically under /media.  If anyone could point out a reason for why it does this, like, if its the result of some package I've installed with apt-get install xubuntu-desktop, I would love you.

Obviously, it's not a huge issue, but I'd really like to figure out why it's behaving this way.  I like having to do it myself much better than this mysterious, albeit working alternative.

Thanks.

Edit:

So, I realize now that hal is a part of this problem.  Still, shouldnt I be seeing something with fdisk?
