Hi there.I was a loyal gentoo user but after a bit of homework Ive recently decided try arch.I just had a quick question.I tried to install several KDE apps (kate, kcontrol, kview) and pacman cant find them.
I get the impression that you need to install whole package groups like kdeutils, kdeadmin, kdegraphics etc to get these apps.To be honest I really dont want most of this software, Just around 3 or 4 apps.In gentoo you can install them one at a time.I figure I could be missing a repo or is that just the way arch works.
Thanks
Mark

Arch makes the packages as the upstream developer provides them. So for the offical Arch KDE packages, you can not installed these programs separately. However, the is a community project called KDEMod that will allow you to do this.

Hi there, and welcome to Arch.
It's not necessarily the way Arch works but the way KDE works. But there is a wiki covering what you want--there usually is--and you could try that http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mak … E_packages
Edit: There is a disclaimer at the top of the wiki--BE CAREFUL, THIS WAY OF INSTALLING KDE APPS CONFLICTS WITH THE OFFICIAL ARCH KDE PACKAGES AND COULD CAUSE PROBLEMS--so not sure if this would be a good way to go, never tried it personally.

thanks for the fast replies, I definately didnt expect any that quick. Its not that important if I cant install them seperately.I just thought I was missing something simple.
The KDEMOD looks promising but does not run kde4 (which I am enjoying) I had a look at the link that bgc1954 provided and the method looks like you would run into problems down the line so I'll leave it alone for now. Thanks again
