www.google.com

There's a patch to lilo. You'll have to patch and rebuild it with ABS.

Re: Animated lilo

It cant be done with the current version of lilo so forget it..  It probal could but no patch has been made for the current versions and the old patch doesnt work as it breaks lilo.. So i would have to downgrade lilo to do this so just forget it..

just remake the patch. the old patch likely won't work because the lines of code do not correspond anymore. look at the patch and old lilo code then look at the new code and then remake the patch.

and if you don't want to pull up lilo and sitch then be sure you are using a googl.com/linux. that way you should get mostly linux relevent hits.

Re: Animated lilo

yeah i'd be interested in this too.  we had animtaed screens on myold distro and, while it is totally unimportant, it did look a HELL of lot better than the graphical lilo advice on the wiki

Re: Animated lilo

I'm reworking the outdated bootsplash howto. This won't change the graphical lilo/grub issue, but it can change the console output if that's what you prefer.

For the animations, maybe I'll look into it later... It's just eyecandy, and therefore I find it unimportant, but when people want howtos... wink

Re: Animated lilo

An Archlinux-Howto about graphical lilo would be nice smile.
I'll also try your new bootsplash-howto when it's finished smile.

Re: Animated lilo

ok someo f this we have established:

to do animated lilo you need an older version of lilo - i.e. that is compatible with the patch - and the patch:

this is from the LFS mailing list:

You nead:
- lilo 21.7 [1]
- SuSE's bootlogo patch [2]
- a 640x480 256color pcx graphic [3]

I found the sources of the patch for lilo (should also work
with 21.6 and 21.6.1) on my SuSE 7.1 source CDs.

an ex-SuSE person - we need this patch so please check you discs! i googled for all my life but it not available - maybe it is included in the SuSE RPMs but i doubt it (and dunno how to check)

Re: Animated lilo

CRACKED IT!

here is all the source you need to compile the last compatible version of lilo with the animation patches:

http://members.optusnet.com.au/rkelsen/ … 51.src.tgz

and here is all the source for creating new screens

http://members.optusnet.com.au/rkelsen/ … .4.tar.bz2

these are all from this webpage:

http://members.optusnet.com.au/rkelsen/lilo.html

so now it is just a case of making a PKGBUILD to grab this source and apply the included patches, right?  That should be easy enough!  I'll try that but we need someone with some skills to create a decent arch boot screen - or a selection of them - i have the artistic talent of a cluster of colour blind hedgehogs...

...in a bag.

I will link the Arch Art thread here too

Re: Animated lilo

oh and as far as downgrading LILO (someone mentioned it above) - what exactly does newer versions of LILO do that is a critical improvement?  i'm sure there are some but for most people it is probably a matter of trade-offs...

...i just realized the original thread starter found these slackware packages and he was also the one put off by downgrading lilo - what's up with that?

Re: Animated lilo

The best would be if a skilled hacker could fix the patch to work with the newest lilo.

Re: Animated lilo

based on the reading i just did it will take quite a skilled person to even make a custom AL splash screen - i know someone who did one for vector linux but i never realized it was so complicated!

Re: Animated lilo

ok - here is the PKGBUILD i have so far:

pkgname=lilo-ani
pkgver=22.3.2
pkgrel=1
pkgdesc="A bootloader for Linux patched for animated splash screens"
url="http://www.gamers.org/~quinet/lilo/index.html"
backup=(etc/lilo.conf)
depends=('glibc')
install=lilo.install
source=(http://members.optusnet.com.au/rkelsen/lilo-$pkgver-51.src.tgz http://www.gamers.org/~quinet/lilo/xray-blue.boot.gz)
md5sums=('6b60a460ef69354d01f475a8ba9f244d' '3e2400551f39f4aa74ee0df09c1dd50c')

build() {
  cd $startdir/src/
  gunzip -cd lilo-22.3.2.tar.gz | tar xf -
  cd lilo-$pkgver
  patch -p1 <../lilo-22.3.2-gfx.diff
  patch -p1 <../lilo-22.3.2-gfx2.diff
  patch -p0 <../lilo-22.3.2-gfx3.diff
  patch -p1 <../lilo-22.3.2-loop_dev.diff
  patch -p1 <../lilo-22.3.2-no_auto_cr.diff
  patch -p1 <../lilo-22.3.2-pdf.diff
  patch -p1 <../lilo-22.3.2-sa.diff
  patch -p1 <../lilo-22.3.2-vga_inst.diff
  patch -p1 <../lilo-22.3.2.diff
  patch -p1 <../lilo-22.3.2-evms.patch
  make || return 1
  make ROOT=$startdir/pkg MAN_DIR=/usr/man install
  mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/etc
  cp $startdir/lilo.conf $startdir/pkg/etc/
}

i managed to get all the patches to work with a bit of trial and error but the make fails:

boot.c: In function `boot_image':
boot.c:79: error: `PAGE_SIZE' undeclared (first use in this function)
boot.c:79: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
boot.c:79: error: for each function it appears in.)
make: *** [boot.o] Error 1

suggestions please?!

.:edit:. missed a patch (last in list) still won't make
