[Solved] KDE4: I don't have titlebars at all!

Preface: I'm not a terribly experienced Linux user, but I know my way around computers, man pages and the command line. EDIT: Sorry for being so verbose - the third paragraph is the important one.

So, I've set up my Arch, even tweaked my bootup time down by 20s (hey, 60->40s is nothing to sneeze at, even if it took me two hours!), so I figured it was time to get Xorg. Now, I had already tried installing Xorg before, but I had some DPI troubles, and didn't like Fluxbox anyway, so I decided to remove it completely a few weeks ago when I was bored and without internet access. I was very thorough, deleting all settings files too (pacman -Rcsn is what I used), so I'm reasonably certain I deleted everything from my old Xorg. Installed again, opted for nvidia drivers this time, and all seemed to be alright, so I figured it was on to KDE next. I looked around a bit, saw the KDEmod project, but decided for vanilla KDE afterall.

I installed kdebase, and kdebase-workspace (it was listed as an optional dependacy). I initially had some trouble starting kdm, but got around that by adding it as a daemon to rc.conf (I also tried the inittab method, but something just didn't click right with it). And now, the climax of the story: my KDE windows have no title bars! Apparently, window borders also come with those, so I can't even resize my windows, let alone move them. As an added side-effect, I have troubles giving focus to windows, meaning I can't use the keyboard (why clicking in the window doesn't give it focus, I'll never know) - I can only assume this is related to the title bars issue.

Needless to say, all this makes my system unusable. I tried reinstalling KDE (also with deleting all config files with the -Rn pacman option), but it didn't help. I ran the window manager that comes with X (XWM? TWM? somesuch) and using Konqueror on it worked fine, so it's definitely something related to some underlying KDE technology. This is all with KDE4.1.1, in case that needs saying.

Thanks for any help in advance! smile

While kwin seems to be in the kdebase-workspace package, perhaps installing kdebase-runtime would help?

What if you try to run kwin? (alt-f2?)

Re: [Solved] KDE4: I don't have titlebars at all!

Sorry it took so long - apparently, the problem is fixed now. I decided to install the whole KDE package (for no particular reason, really), and something in it solved the problem - might be the runtime package, might've been something else. In any case, I find it really silly something like that isn't included in the base package. Thanks for your help, in any case.

Installing KDE would simply mean 'pacman -S kde' to me. No idea how one might think otherwise.
