Okay, I'm at a loss. I installed KDE (pacman -S kde), but "which kdm" and "which startkde" report no such files. I've rebooted; same deal. Seeing evidence in the forum that they should be in /opt, I list that directory -- nothing there.
For what it's worth:
I had some initial trouble (new install) with my NVIDIA setup. But it's fixed to the point that at the least I can get an xterm running (the "Simple baseline X test" from the Beginner's Guide). Also, in frustration at some point I removed KDE (pacman -R kde), installed xfce4 (which worked, but was too sad looking...), removed that, and reinstalled kde...
Any help greatly appreciated.

/usr/bin/kdm, part of kdebase-workspace, which in turn is part of the kde group.

Ahhh. Not there, but now I see what happened:
I installed "kdebase", not "kde" -- the Beginner's Guide says kdebase is a "slimmed down version with less applications". Including the things you need to run it!
Thanks.
