kernel panic after upgrade..

hej,
i upgrade yesterday my system, in the update was also a new kernel and much more... al works fine, but after the restart i get an kernel panic:

Faile to execute /init
Kernel panic - not syncing: no init found. try passing init= option to kernel.

i tried to reinstall the kernel, sysvinit and much more (via an live cd and chroot)... but nothing helps. what can i do? has anybody an idea?

thanks,
papierschiff

Re: kernel panic after upgrade..

hej, my menu.lst:

#general configuration
timeout 5
default 0
color light-blue/black light-cyan/blue

# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd /boot/kernel26.img

# (1) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux Fallback
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd /boot/kernel26-fallback.img

title Arch Linux UUID Fallback
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/d9e5e00c-0397-42eb-af31-0ec74bee9c76 ro
initrd /boot/kernel26-fallback.img

title Arch Linux UUID
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/d9e5e00c-0397-42eb-af31-0ec74bee9c76 ro
initrd /boot/kernel26.img

the i addes the last 2 items, becouse i thought that the problem was the finding of the harddisk. but uuid didn't change something sad

i hope somebody can help... not nice that there are still kernel panics so fast and "easy"... sad

PS: perhaps it is interesting: sda1 is and xfs partition... but it worked since ~2years without problems

Re: kernel panic after upgrade..

Obviously it made me wonder whether you've running a quite "old" installation of Arch. Could it be that you have mkinitrd instead of mkinitcpio? The switch is before my time with Arch, but that was the only thing that came to my mind looking at your menu.lst since it shows both a configuration with persistent labels, by-uuid, and what was standard before.

Maybe I'm totally off target, but as far as I understand mkinitrd won't work if compiled for by-uuid support.

Re: kernel panic after upgrade..

why should i reinstall the complete system? with pacman -Syu the system was always on the newest level...
i use mkinitcpio, so there should be no problems with uuid... also sda / hda don't work.... i don't know why the system kan't find init...
i tried to use lilo, but the problem is the same... argh!!! how can this happen? what can i do know? is there a possibility to switch the kernel to an older version? i don't want to to an complete reinstall... to much configuration...

Re: kernel panic after upgrade..

I haven't suggested a re-installation of the system. By "old" I simply meant that maybe it had some "parts" left from the "old days" (a lot of exclamation marks there!). If mkinitcpio is in place then that possibility is excluded.

Do you have more than one hard-drive and does the system behave the same when booted with the by-uuid? I don't have any other ideas though, but I'll see if I find anything useful.

Re: kernel panic after upgrade..

hej,
thanks that you try to help me. mkinitcpio is in place and works... smile
on the system is only one harddisk and also only one system. yes, it doesn't mater if grup is booting via uuid or /dev/sda1. nothing change sad -perhaps it is only a small mistake, but i don't know where.. and special i don't know why this can happen...

so any ideas to solve the problem are welcome smile

Re: kernel panic after upgrade..

i watch to my pacman.log:
the last updated packages are (without applications like opera...): kernel26(2.6.26.2-1 -> 2.6.26.3-1), qt(4.4.1-2 -> 4.4.1-4), neon, orbit2, libidl2, pacman, dbus, ca-certificates, run-parts, openssl... perhaps that helps..
