Several weblinks I can't access

Hi,

When I surf the web with Arch, I can access the most of webpages in the net; however, there are several links that I can't enter and I don't know why.

For example, I can't see this pdf: http://www.upc.es/web/sga/ales/ReconeixementIdiomes.pdf

However, in other PC's on my LAN, or in a Windows XP machine over VirtualBox, this link (and other links that also I have problems like downloading mozilla plugins) works perfectly. Also, a friend who has Arch too these links works for him.

What can be the source of the problem? These links doesn't work on my arch in general (not in firefox, not in opera, not in konqueror...).

Greetings

Re: Several weblinks I can't access

Although you do say, that you've tried several browsers, is it possible that you do not have them properly set up to handle pdf files? Maybe you don't have a pdf viewer installed? Have you tried simply right clicking the link and choose save file? I don't know of anything in linux that would universally block access to pdf files, but try

wget http://www.upc.es/web/sga/ales/ReconeixementIdiomes.pdf

in a terminal, just to be sure (wget is a command line download tool)

As for mozilla plugins: The lego block icons saying "you don't have such and such plugin, click here..." do not work in any linux install I've ever tried. You need to use pacman for stuff liek that. Or consult the wiki, e.g. for the Flash plugin

EDIT: And if there are "several links", post them all, not just one: it'll make it easier for people to see a pattern.

[david@helena ~]$ wget http://www.upc.es/web/sga/ales/ReconeixementIdiomes.pdf
--2008-09-02 11:55:02--  http://www.upc.es/web/sga/ales/ReconeixementIdiomes.pdf
Resolving www.upc.es... 32.1.64.176, 2001:40b0:7500:1::21
Connecting to www.upc.es|32.1.64.176|:80...

No response... it can't connect :S

I've said also all mozilla plugins from addons.mozilla.org. I can't download them :S

Re: Several weblinks I can't access

$ host www.upc.es
www.upc.es has address 147.83.194.21
www.upc.es has IPv6 address 2001:40b0:7500:1::21

32.1.64.176 belongs to AT&T.
I'd almost suspect something fishy. DNS cache poisoning or so.

Re: Several weblinks I can't access

So, how can I solve that?

Re: Several weblinks I can't access

Ask your provider about those DNS issues. And put some other public nameserver into /etc/resolv.conf for the time being.

I  might just show off my own stupidity here, but wouldn't the virtual machine be using the same DNS as the host? And if it works for the virtual machine...?
