[SOLVED] Warcraft 3 (with Wine) does not work in Arch

Okay. I played a lot Warcraft III The Frozen Throne with Wine in Ubuntu. When I started to use Arch, of course I wanted to continue playing.

But, when I started the game for the first time it gets into main screen (with 800x600 resolution, it is default when you start the game for the first time, my xorg.conf supports it) but freezes after about 2 secs. And I have to kill X. But now it even does not start (it changes resolution from 1920x1200 to 800x600, but does not continue)! I'm using KDE4.1 - is this somehow related to nVidia driver bug (I'm using nVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra)?

Arch 64bit KDE4.1
Wine 1.1.3 (installed with this, but also tested this - same problem)
WC3 patched 1.22 - installed MS Visual C 2005 Runtimes in order to get it work (see http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p … n&iId=3126 )

I'm running the game from NTFS partition.

Edit: Tested with emulated desktop. Problem remains.

Edit2: Solved problem with 32bit Arch. Works like a charm!

Re: [SOLVED] Warcraft 3 (with Wine) does not work in Arch

Hmm, I remember when I installed Arch for a friend of mine Warcraft 3 worked with wine almost right out of the box (it was also on a NTFS partition). Why did you have to install MS Visual C 2005 Runtimes ?

Re: [SOLVED] Warcraft 3 (with Wine) does not work in Arch

You sure you've installed all the necesary lib32 packages? lib32-nvidia-utils (if you are using nvidia video card, that is) lib32-mesa and etc... (I can't tell you which packages are needed since I used a 32bit chroot...)
Also did you try to rename the movies dir? It seams to crash the game on some machines...

The lib32 packages are horrible on Arch just use a 32 bit chroot.

Check that AppDB site (info for 1.22 patch). Patch requires MS Visual C 2005 in order to run the game (installed it with winetricks)

All libs are installed. It can playback movies, but crashes when it gets to the main screen. So the problem isn't it.

Re: [SOLVED] Warcraft 3 (with Wine) does not work in Arch

In my case such trick helped :
instead of launching it by

wine wow.exe

I used

wine wow.exe -opengl

which uses opengl for rendering and works almost that fast as on MS Windows. Maybe this is the issue?

(P.S. I may be wrong with that option spelling, I'll check it later at home)

I already did it. I'm hardcore gamer - I have read (almost) every possible guide to improve performance. tongue

And that's not the problem. There's no difference between -opengl and without it.

If you're a hardcore gamer then I'll just advise you to keep Windows installed for your gaming needs. There's nothing wrong with dual-booting for that wink

The best solution for Hardgamers is to buy a xbox360 big_smile

Now that I think of...
Let me guess: You are using hardware acceleration set to "Emulation" and Driver emulation with alsa.
For some reason WarCraft III doesn't like those (Hardware acceleration in particular...) Set Hardware acceleration to Basic or Full and the game will launch...

I have (nLited) WinXP for games. But WC3 works fine with Wine, that's why I want to play it with Linux. It's faster just click a shortcut without rebooting. big_smile

I don't prefer consoles. And FPS games (which I play most) are crap on consoles.

It's set to "Full". And as I said, game launches but freezes after a few secs. But music continues even if a screen is frozen.

0.9.54 seems to be the best version for WC3, give it a try if you really want to. For me it works pretty much flawless (must be fun to hear right wink?)

<OT>
a "hardcore gamer" does not need dual boot it depends on what you play all the games i realy like to play run perfectly under wine it depends on the games that you play...

Re: [SOLVED] Warcraft 3 (with Wine) does not work in Arch

(Bump)

I reinstalled Arch, but 32bit version (and with Gnome). And now it's working...

Well, I think that 64bit version of Arch was the problem. Whatever, now the game works like a charm. smile And of course, I'm using the newest Wine.

Tell me a gamer that uses an XBOX for strategy games. wink
A mouse is made for FPS, not some analog controllers, I can't stand it.

And an XBOX 360 will never be capable of playing Crysis at Full Res big_smile

Re: [SOLVED] Warcraft 3 (with Wine) does not work in Arch

I'm not currently using arch, but I had a similar problem on Ubuntu.  Try renaming the movies folder to something else.  For some reason WINE doesn't like the movies and it freaks the game out.  After doing this the game has worked perfectly for me.  Hope it works for you!

Re: [SOLVED] Warcraft 3 (with Wine) does not work in Arch

Hmm... Stoped working for me too... I don't know when... Last time I tried the game it was working and it was before I upgraded to 2.6.26 kernel... could the new kernel be thr problem (on x86_64) Could someone confirm if his war3 in 64 bit (I use 32bit chroot) doesn't work?

Also I downgraded to from xf86-video-intel 2.4.2 to xf86-video-intel 2.3.2

Re: [SOLVED] Warcraft 3 (with Wine) does not work in Arch

Mine still works:

$ uname -a
Linux arch64 2.6.26-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Sep 9 09:56:28 UTC 2008 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

$ pacman -Q bin32-wine
bin32-wine 1.1.4-1

By the way, as far as the OP goes, my game required one of the lib32 deps from nspluginwrapper to run.. I didn't get around to testing which one it was specifically since I ended up using nspw-flash.
