"ugly" fonts on gnome

I've just downloaded packages from gnome and gnome-extra.I don't know how to explain but I thought default fonts of Gnome would look the same in every distro, but here are pretty different with respect to my previous slack installation, even if I always use Sans font. could it depend on xorg configuration?

Re: "ugly" fonts on gnome

Try installing:

ttf-bitstream-vera

It should fix it.

Re: "ugly" fonts on gnome

you could also try dejavufonts. They are an extension of the bitstream-vera fonts

Also, read this: (I used to use LCD packages, now I use the ubuntu ones in AUR)
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fonts

when I first started using Arch, I didn't realize just how much info is in the WIKI. You can find the solutions (with nice how-tos) to a VERY large portion of ??s you may have when starting out.

Re: "ugly" fonts on gnome

yes, thank you both. Actually was a problem of ttf-bistream package.

Yes I know and use pretty often the Wiki, the fact is that I feel a little confused by such a basical installation, user has the responsibility of choosing and configuring about a 70% of things that other distros offer at least at install time..

Anyway, I'm getting even more impressed by arch

Re: "ugly" fonts on gnome

I thought it was more user friendly. That's not a remark, anyway. I used slackware for years and decided to switch so I'm getting a little confused these first days, specially with udev that I've never used and wpa_supplicant that's driving me nuts

see soon on the forum

Re: "ugly" fonts on gnome

Try to add
export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1

to /etc/profile and logout.

pacman -Rs xorg-fonts-100dpi xorg-fonts-75dpi

Or you can try microsoft fonts if you have higher resolution than 1024...
