Does anyone has any experience with this printer? Can't find much on the net about how well it works with Linux, apart from this:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_print … IXMA_MP210
and a few Ubuntu threads. It does have drivers released by Canon, but they are packaged as debs or rpms - is it possible to install these in Arch? There was also some talk of it working with gutenprint under a different Pixma driver, but nothing confirmed.
Its currently on offer for a brilliant price on Amazon, and is very tempting for a poor student like myself... but no point in buying it if it won't work with Linux. any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a printer that works very well with Linux? Primarily for document printing with Latex.

Have a look at the AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=16696. With 2 votes at least 3 people seem to be using the printer with arch. I have only installed one at my parents' ubuntu system and that worked fine.

Thank you! I thought I searched the AUR
Just installed it and the printer isn't coming up in the list in the CUPS web interface where you add printers... it didn't add a ppd file to the models directory either. am I missing something? foomatic isn't installed but I didn't think I need it... gutenprint, cups etc are all installed.

I have no idea why the installation of the ppd file is not included in this script. It's in the source tarball though. So you can either copy is manually (and dirty) into the ppd directory (/usr/share/ppd I think), or better modify the PKGBUILD to include it.

I've also got this printer
The Scanner works well.
I've yet read the how to of CUPS and i've also installed the gutenprint driver, the MP 210 are experimental but I could also use the 220
Those are the message when I link the printer

When I try to add the printer by CUPS it is not detected
Any solution?

@dartfira
I read somewhere that removing the foomatic drivers can solve the printer not being detected.
I use the Canon supplied drivers for my PIXMA MG8120 as per the following thread:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=128969
See this update also:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=136415
{note: you can also downgrade a package if need be}

Still doesn't work even with this update.

I have the exact same printer and also had the problem that cups didn't see it. I had to blacklist usblp and create the following udev rule:
/etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules
ATTR{idVendor}=="04a9", ATTR{idProduct}=="1721", MODE:="0660", GROUP:="lp"Don't ask me where I got this from, I seriously don't remember...
I'm also using the MP220 driver btw, works fine...

I think that i love you.
It works i've to select the MP220 driver because by the gutenprint the page was white.
