OpenOffice: Saving Microsoft Word format (.doc) to NCP Mount

For some reason, I'm unable to save Microsoft Word (.doc) files to NCP mounted volumes from OpenOffice. The network user and mount point both have the correct permissions. I'm able to save in .odt format without any problems, but attempting to save as .doc gives me a "general input/output error." The really weird thing is that if the file does not exist, it WILL save the first time. I can also manually move the file from the local filesystem to the NCP mount without any problems. If I try to overwrite that file, however, it will give the same error and not save.

This is a known problem, apparently, but it was supposed to have been fixed a while ago. I know that it has been fixed in NeoOffice (the Mac OS X version of OOo).

Does anyone know how to fix this?
