need help on spec for machine with 3 monitors

I'm going to be building a new pc and one of my requirements that it can run at least 3 monitors. I've been told that it is easy to get a motherboard that has 2 pcie slots and just put two dual headed cards in but before I spend all the cash on doing it I want to check what I'm looking for in terms of linux compatibility. Does this setup work in linux and if so, should most current ATI and nvidia cards just work or do I need to look out for certain models?

I am a developer so just want the third monitor for more text editing space so I'm not looking for gaming quality graphics just a reasonably high res and a system that just works.

Any advice or suggestions?
