Icecat Question

I noticed in the screenshot thread that someone was using Icecat. I was curious if anyone could tell me if there is any benefit to running Icecat from AUR instead of the standard Firefox from Extra?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Icecat Question

I'm not sure about Icecat, but I always use the Swiftweasel for my processor. It could be wishful thinking, but I do think it loads quicker than regular Firefox.

Basically, when somebody tweaks Firefox, they can't distribute it as "Firefox" so they distribute it as something else. In the case of Icecat, it seems that it's mostly ethical. They don't like that certain parts of Firefox are proprietary, so they released a totally free version.

So, use it if you prefer truly open source software to non-truly open source. You shouldn't notice any performance difference.

Re: Icecat Question

Icecat is nothing more than standard firefox (about the last pre-3.0), BUT it is completely built up on open source and free source.
There's no real advantage for running icecat...
