Arch on EEE 1000(H)

Yet another EEE PC Topic big_smile

I have just installed Archlinux on my brand new EEE PC 1000H using the instructions for EEE PC 901.
The ethernet module works fine, just as xorg configuration and audio setup.
But when it comes to the wireless module and ACPI setup the 1000H seems to be slightly different from the 901.

I tried igeah's kernel and the stock kernel with eeert2860 from the AUR. The module loads fine, shows up in the iwconfig listing but it denies to accept any ESSID.
Executing "iwconfig ra0 essid somevalue" does not print anything but the essid does not show up in iwconfig.

The other problem is, that after installing acpi-eee901 /proc/acpi is working great. I can also use pm-suspend to suspend to ram and wake up without any problems. But /proc/acpi/asus does not exists. -> No FN-Buttons, No way to activate the webcam.

Has anyone tried to get arch running on the EEE 1000H? I would be glad to hear some hints and experiences.

Thanks!
Dennis

Re: Arch on EEE 1000(H)

Hi,
I have eee 1000H too, about 2 days and i am trying install arch. I have same problems as you.

I am using eee-kernel901 2.6.26.2-2 with that ethernet works fine, wireless seems also OK, but i dont test it a lot (yesterday, i also cant connect to my home wifi, also problem with essid) ill try it today with wpa-supplicant and let you know.

I install acpi package from AUR acpi-eee 10.0-1 with that suspend is OK, buttons and OSD seems OK too (but need some modifications in acpi scripts i think), but also dont have folders /proc/eee and /proc/acpi/asus

I can turn off wifi but like a lot of people said in threads about 901 i cant turn it on. Touchpad seems to work with evdev in xorg and installed package xf86-input-evdev.

So thats my experiences, so if you discover something, let us know...;-) thanks a lot

Hi,

Which Image did you use?
And which partion table?

And do I have to do something particular when installing?

Can't seem to get it all to work.

Thanks.

Re: Arch on EEE 1000(H)

pardon me as I sidetrack your thread a little:  Does the eee get physically bigger the higher the number?  I mean, is it still a umpc, or is it more like a small regular laptop?  If I ever get one it will be because it is tiny--I already have a pretty small laptop...

Re: Arch on EEE 1000(H)

to scrawler:
for me, eee 1000 means great compromise between very good mobility and possibility to write with ten fingers on keyboard without problems...and of course price is very fine for me.

to blalien:
finally, i use arch stock kernel, and compile modules from aur for ethernet, wifi, acpi-eee901 and eeepc-linux from google code...
now my wifi turning off and on works fine but havent test bluetooth and webcam yet...because that are things that i dont need at all...

Re: Arch on EEE 1000(H)

Dennis,

I'm a recent switchover to Arch (today's my second day playing with it) from more automated-config distros (Ubuntu, Suse, etc.).  I installed 2009.08 via USB earlier this afternoon.

Did you ever get your 1000H wireless up and running?  If so, how?

I'm having the exact problem you described.  The wireless device exists (iwconfig shows ra0 and what I'm assuming is normal output).  I've gone through what I think are the correct steps to enable it (ifconfig ra0 up, iwlist ra0 scan, iwconfig ra0 essid <SSID of valid unencrypted network from the scan>), but iwconfig ra0 still shows ESSID as the empty string.  Running dhcpcd ra0 has no effect on the output of iwconfig ra0, either.  The dhcpcd ra0 command times out.

I'll worry about suspend to disk/memory and dedicated buttons later.

Thanks,
John

Re: Arch on EEE 1000(H)

What a coincidence, today, i bought new SSD to my 1000H laptop wink and there is after year new post...:)

To papatrpt89:
If you have problems change SSID with wifi, try to use wpasupplicant. I have this laptop over a year and I can only use ralink wifi with wpa_supplicant, nothing else working. I am reinstalling system to gentoo now so if i found some changes with new 2.6.31 kernel, i will post it...if you have some other problems, dont mind to ask, i'll help if i can.

Re: Arch on EEE 1000(H)

On laptops I would recommend networkmanager and nm-applet or wicd. I think wpasupplicant is a pain in the ass when you try to manually configure it.
Since 2.6.30 I had no problems with my wlan (before there were issues with wpa/wpa2).
I have tried several wlans with wpa/wpa2 psk/wpa enterprise and they all work with nm-applet.

Only problem is an open wlan where dhcpcd sometimes fail with "bad file descriptor" when trying to set the offered ip. You may check your logs for that?
