mplayer jumpy in windowed mode, wellbehaved in fullscreen

I'm trying out mplayer as someone told me it performed better than vlc when reading files on a NAS drive. It does but there's a problem: video playback is extremely jumpy when mplayer is in normal windowed mode. When I make it fullscreen, everything settles down after a second or two. This goes for loca files and network drive files.

I have gone over the settings in mplayer (gmplayer) but Ican't seem to find anything obviously wrong. I'm using the Xv overlay (which is also the default in my Xorg.conf) and ALSA for audio. The video driver is fglrx, the wm is openbox. Starting a video from the command line resukts in the following output:
