Can't Load Boot Disc

I recently recieved an old computer from work. When I try to boot from any of a number of CD/DVDs (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc...) nothing happens. (I am not surprised by the failure of the DVDs b/c the desktop only has a CD drive). Anyway, is there any wisdom I might not be considering? The computer boots to a boot screen (below) and then when I select F1 (continue) it boots the current OS (Windows 2000 auf Deutsch; which I don't have a password to use).

Processor Type: Pentium II processor
Processor Speed: 350 MHz
Cache RAM: 512 KB
System Memory: 128 MB
Memory Bank 0: 128 MB SDRAM
Memory Bank 1: Not Installed
Memory Bank 2: Not Installed

Re: Can't Load Boot Disc

That is an error with the floppy drive.

Yah. I removed it from the machine. Could that keep the board from booting from the CD drive?

Re: Can't Load Boot Disc

I disabled everything related to the floppy drive in the bios and don't get the above error. It now hangs at the boot screen for a much longer time before booting windows.

Re: Can't Load Boot Disc

Just to make sure it's not something silly, you're sure that you're using an install disk for the right architecture, right? (e.g. not using x86_64 on i686)

Yah. I have never installed x86 on any of my machines.

Re: Can't Load Boot Disc

Have you checked the disk on another machine? Maybe it's scratched/corrupted/been infected by proximity to an M$ disk.

Re: Can't Load Boot Disc

Arg! So. I wiped the HD. I have a PS/2 Keyboard. And the only disc that will boot is Geubuntu. I burned fresh Arch and Ubuntu discs and neither boots. Even though Geubuntu loads the linux kernal, it isn't able to run X because of "bad sectors." Arg...

That's a message from ur BIOS. Try removing & then reinserting ur CMOS battery.

Re: Can't Load Boot Disc

Arg! I burned the new Arch and Ubuntu ISOs using Toast on OSX and it burned the file on the CD rather than the image.
