According to: http://library.gnome.org/admin/system-a … -id2687328
Desktop entry files must reside in the $XDG_DATA_DIRS/applications directory and must have a .desktop file extension. If $XDG_DATA_DIRS1 is not set, then the default path is /usr/share is used.
Where do I see if the XDG_DATA_DIRS1 is set, if I have one, and where do I set one? Where do I find my .desktop file to mess around with? I want to see if there is a possibility to get rid of the Applications + Places + System, and create my own custom menu.
And is there any way of having the menu look like the menu in linux mint?

$ grep -r XDG_DATA_DIRS /etc/profile.d/* /etc/X11/
For the desktop files, look in /usr/share/applications or run locate *.desktop.
