Flash and CNN.com

Hey all...

I was wondering what secret ingredient was needed to be able to view the video content on CNN.com. I know flash is needed, but when I go to the site, it said I need flash 8 and flash 9 was detected and it asks me to download the plugin.

Now, with *ubuntu, Suse, and some others (*Ubuntu derivatives), it "Just works". I have no issues on the OS's viewing content from CNN.com.

I am able to view flash content on other websites including You Tube, but news sites are a no go. So what do I need to install for it to work?

Thanks so much for your help!!!

Joe

Re: Flash and CNN.com

I hate answering my own questions, but I noticed that the ubuntu flavors are using Flash 10 and Arch is still using Flash 9. Would this cause it?

I think Flash Player 10 is still in beta, so I doubt that a big site like CNN would require it yet. Some sites just dislike people using Linux. You couldn't watch the democratic convention online through Linux, if I remember right.

Try playing around with this. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59

Re: Flash and CNN.com

Well, I would understand this if it didn't work in other distros, but as I mentioned, all flavors of Ubuntu and Suse play video from CNN.com fine. I checked on my Kubuntu system and didn't see the user agent switcher installed. And all distros are using Firefox 3.

Could it possibly be the way Arch devs compile something? Either Firefox or some other component?

Can you watch video on CNN.com using Arch, is it maybe something I am doing wrong?

Thanks for the reply

Re: Flash and CNN.com

I can watch videos on CNN without a problem. The only thing I might have different in my system might be that I went to about:config in the address bar, after promising I'd be careful I typed "agent" in the filter bar and changed the general.useragent.extra.firefox to say Firefox instead of GrandParadiso.

On a side not: so much trash there in CNN all political blah blah blah... I just clikced on the video of a dog who dialed 911 and saved his owners life, now that is a true American hero, politicians should bow to this dog. cool

I'll let you know when I fix it.

OOoohhh... I think you are on 2 something... Mine says Firefox/3.0.1. Maybe I will try that on my arch system and see if it works. This was default on my *Ubuntu system.

And I read about that dog too... I wonder how many times he had to "Fake" a seizure to train his dog... That is pretty cool!!!

Thanks again for looking into this!!!

Re: Flash and CNN.com

Flash 10 RC 2 on 64 bit through nspluginwrapper here. Some sites including CNN choke if flashblock is enabled. If you have it, disable it and try again.

Did you download the Flash 10 from the flash site and copy to your .mozilla/plugins dir? I didnt see that version in testing.

Thanks!!!

I used flashplugin-mozilla from AUR. The last two releases I simply downloaded and overwrote the previous version. Unfortunately, it takes a bunch of 32 bit libraries to get it working. I currently have 59 32 bit packages installed on my machine of which most are for Flash. I also have Curl symlinked. This is, of course, very bad practice.

Re: Flash and CNN.com

Got my Flash to work in Firefox with nspluginwrapper-flash-beta, CNN.com and everything else works fine. Maybe you should try using that instead of nspluginwrapper-flashplugin-mozilla. They're both for Mozilla, except the beta plugin uses Flash Player 10 (so a few sites with crappy flash version detection might give you trouble).
