New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

I've just installed Arch on my new PC but, for some reason, it doesn't seem to be recognising the hardware, viz. the nVidia MCP67 chipset.  Here's the lspci:

Can anyone tell me what module I need to load (configure MODULES= in rc.conf) to get it working?

btw, here's the MODULES= stuff from my current rc.conf:

MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
#MOD_BLACKLIST=() #deprecated
MODULES=(e1000e forcedeth slhc snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-hda-intel soundcore)

Re: New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

Thanks.  I ran hwdetect --modules and then copied and pasted the resulting output into MODULES= in /etc/rc.conf but, still no joy sad
Any other ideas?

Re: New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

Thanks, but it didn't work.  The forcedeth module is already loaded but I think it's on of the following which is causing the blockage:

RAM memory
ISA bridge
SMBus
Co-processor
IDE interface
PCI bridge

(see above lspci output)

If only I knew which one.  It's been 2 days now without Archlinux sad

Re: New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

It would help more if you described your problem in more detail than "it doesn't work".

Which mobo are you using? Does it boot at all? What error message do you get and where?

Re: New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

It boots Ubuntu fine.  Arch linux doesn't complain either.  I only found out about the problem when I tried to pacman -Syu straight after the install - there was no networking.  ifconfig had done its job but there was no routing table.  I manually added route add default gw 192.168.0.1 and edited /etc/resolv.conf to make sure I could get to my router but, again, it wouldn't work.  The forcedeth module had been loaded (ethernet driver) so I took a look at lspci (details in very first post) and can see that it's appears to be an issue with the PCI bus (the ethernet hangs off the PCI bus)I ran hwdetect --modules and pasted the output into /etc/rc.conf and rebooted.  Still no joy.

The mobo is an ASRock 939N68PV-GLAN.  It has an nVidia chipset (GeForce 7050 NB + nForce 630A MCP SB).  From my lspci results it would appear the problem is with the 630A MCP.  As Ubuntu works and Arch doesn't I'm perplexed.  And yes I've googled and followed what little help there is around.  Nothing has worked so far.  Hopefully someone will have experienced a problem with either the same mobo or the 630A MCP and they can tell me what needs to be done.

Re: New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

You are using the wrong network module methinks. I will check what exactly your mobo needs, but you seem to have another network controller there:

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82572EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 06)

What does 'hwdetect --net' show?

Edit:
Also check the loaded modules in Ubuntu with lsmod.

Re: New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

Thnx.  I've already done that.  Nothing stood out to me as to what was module was missing.  Ubuntu has 80+.  Archlinux has 50+.  I'm getting to the point where I think I'll have to rebuild the whole kernel (with Ubuntu's .config perhaps) sad

I have two ethernet interfaces.  The nVidia Gigabit ethernet is attached to the mobo.  The intel Gigabit ethernet is a PCIe x1 card.  I want to bond them eventually, but I, uh, need archlinux working first.

Re: New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

Sorry to revive an old post but I'm having the same issue, my girlfriend has a Nvidia based mobo with integrated ethernet port, when I use lspci it shows that it is there, when I do a modprobe forcedeth and then I do ifconfig there are no network interfaces (only the loopback). Is there a step I'm missing?, this happends even if I boot from Arch's pendrive, there are no NIC's so I can't even update anything. I have tryed with a Fedora 12 live cd and it works and says it's using forcedeth as module to handle eth, why it doesn't work on a fresh arch install?

Re: New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

Sorry about that, but I think it's exactly  the same issue, doesn't matter if the versions are different, the fact remains the same (As the rules say, this is a valid necrobump smile, non the less thank you @DSpider for pointing that out I didn't know before this), there is no ethernet support on fresh installed Archlinux for nvidia ethernet and I just want to know if there should be a command or some other module to load so I can use ethernet. Now it wont matter, my girlfriend seems good with her Fedora install, but there must be a fix to this so if I want to buy a Nvidia mobo in the future I can resolve this in place.

Re: New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

Moderator comment:  I am going to leave this thread open for now.  In a situation like this, we prefer that you start a new thread and link back to the ancient thread.  This is because a lot has changed in the kernel over four years.  This may be the same problem, on the other hand, it may not.  It could be that Arch is missing a module, or it could be everything is fine and it could be that the depreciated ifconfig tool is lying to you.

Lets try a quick experiment.  After the modprobe, what does ip link have to say?

Re: New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

well, this is awkward, my girlfriend got impatient and wanted to keep in Fedora 17 for now, but I think there should be a solution so I will download the new Arch ISO and try it next weekend (When I see her ) on live iso to see if this what was it. Thanks everyone for the patience, I need to figure that out so I can switch her to Arch.

Re: New install on new mobo (nVidia chipset): driver problem

Dumb, so dumb, Sorry for all the trouble, ifconfig is indeed depreciated, ip link detects perfectly the NIC, thank you very much ewaller, and again, sorry for the trouble.
