The title pretty much describes it.
Here's the last two lines of my log after I press the power button:
Sep 16 16:05:56 myhost gnome-power-manager: (paul) Shutting down computer. Reason: The power button has been pressed.
Sep 16 16:06:02 myhost logger: PowerButton pressed: PWRF
Any thoughts on the problem?

try add to kernel:
acpi=off
or
noapic
or
nolapic
Are you using a distribution kernel?or your kernel?

Doesn't exactly work... sure pressing the power button shuts off the machine, but it's a hard power-down, and drives don't get unmounted or gnome-session saved. Also, it makes a bunch of power management stuff not work. I want gnome-power-manager to be able to control what happens when I hit the power button.
Oh, and I am using a distro kernel.

Sorry for the double post but this problem remains. Does anyone have anything further to say?

Add your user to the "power" group.
gpasswd -a <user> power
