What is your favorite artist, and what do you have the most of?

moe. is definitely my favorite band. I was surprised at my top artists though... I need to prune my library.

mpc clear
mpc ls | mpc add >/dev/null # Adds every song in library to playlist
mpc playlist --format %artist% 2>&1 | cut -d' ' -f3- | perl -ne 'chomp; s/^\s+//; s/\s+$//; $artists{$_}++; }{ foreach my $key (keys %artists) { printf "%0.3d %s\n", $artists{$key}, $key }' | sort -rn | head

588
422 moe.
407 Iron Maiden
245 Yngwie Malmsteen
218 Creedence Clearwater Revival
175 Spin Doctors
174 Keller Williams
166 Stevie Ray Vaughan
164 Leo Kottke
139 GWAR

Gotta go delete that Yngwie... His music would be so much better if he didn't _sing_

Re: What is your favorite artist, and what do you have the most of?

I'm not really listening to any of this at the moment (except I listened to Echoes from Pink Floyd after Rick Wright died), but I've heard all of it a bazillion times:

438 The Beatles
338 David Bowie
273 Brian Eno
229 The Cure
227 Bob Dylan
223 Yes
209 Jethro Tull
188 Queen
181 Pink Floyd
153 U2

And you are lucky to think so. Please don't go looking for (most) of his albums, where he does. Stick to the instrumentals and you will be able to still enjoy it.

Trance here.

Basically, if the style is uplifting, I like it, since I listen to music to stabilize my mood and to kind of "salt" (in a random number generation context) my idea generator tongue

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.

Re: What is your favorite artist, and what do you have the most of?

Yngwie never did vocals on any album. He always hired other singers.

These guys sang on his albums:

Jeff Scott Soto
Mark Boals
Joe Lynn Turner
Goran Edman
Mike Vescera
Mats Levén
Doogie White

And now it's Tim Owens. Yngwie may have sung a few songs on live shows but never was he the vocalist on any album.

Re: What is your favorite artist, and what do you have the most of?

I don't know that I really have a stable favorite artist; it seems to change all the time. At the moment, however, I've been listening almost exclusively to Riverside.

098 Opeth
091 Pain of Salvation
085 Kamelot
065 Led Zeppelin
059 Dishwalla
052 Porcupine Tree
049 Goo Goo Dolls
043 Joe Satriani
039 Jonny Lang
038 Audioslave

I'm surprised at some of the bands that made this list... I haven't listened to the Goo Goo Dolls in a long time, and I rarely listen to Satriani, Lang, Dishwalla, or Audioslave anymore. That's half my list...

Some good bands that I don't have enough of are Meshuggah, The Gathering, and Radiohead.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I just recently purged all the crappy music from my collection. The numbers would be higher otherwise, and Dream Theater would probably be at the top of my list. How the hell do you guys have 500+ songs from the same artist? Maybe this would better be measured by the hours or minutes of an artist. My 98 Opeth songs are almost all 10+ minutes.

lulz. When I try to add all the songs, it stops at "\G". Limitations in the playlist I guess. Anyways:

1502 2Pac
1469 Eminem
622 Madonna

Re: What is your favorite artist, and what do you have the most of?

Nevermind, I was just stupid, there was a limitation in the mpd rc file. Here's the true results:

850 50 Cent
785 2Pac
527 2pac
451 Cornelis Vreeswijk
356 DMX
353 Bob Marley
328 Creedence Clearwater Revival
305 Britney Spears
283 Beyonce
277 Busta Rhymes

Edit: No that's not true at all. Even though I changed the limit to 100.000 tracks I still don't get all of my music in the playlist. Wierd. :S

I would disagree. They are all highly skilled vocalists.
Yngwie picks only the best of the best of the best from the hard rock/heavy metal field for his crew wink

Just look at the list of musicians that worked with him. They're the elite man big_smile

The voices themselves are at least not bad, I will accept that. It's the damn lyrics that drive me nuts. He is an abject failure as a songwriter. The only good lyrics I've heard from him are the ones he has covered

Re: What is your favorite artist, and what do you have the most of?

well i will not use my mpd stats, because they are not representing my overall charts...

Impossible to sort those, so just a few names:

New Model Army
Levellers
Soundgarden
Comes With The Fall
Mother Tongue
The Cult
The Pogues
Pearl Jam
Chumbawamba
The Gathering
Screaming Trees
Meat Puppets
The Cure
The Melvins
Anathema
The Jesus And The Mary Chain
Opeth

And many favorites missing here smile

Re: What is your favorite artist, and what do you have the most of?

daenyth@Muspelheimr ~ $ perl /home/Daenyth/mpc_playlist_stats |sort -rn +1 | head
46:09:41 587
61:31:19 422 moe.
37:21:38 407 Iron Maiden
13:21:44 218 Creedence Clearwater Revival
14:58:20 189 Yngwie Malmsteen
14:49:24 175 Spin Doctors
14:14:46 174 Keller Williams
13:35:49 166 Stevie Ray Vaughan
08:30:07 164 Leo Kottke
07:46:05 139 GWAR

Tada! Time is displayed in HH:MM:SS, and still sorting by number of tracks. It acts on the current playlist as before, so you still need to clear and add if you haven't done so already.
Get the yummy perl goodness here

I have entirely too much Iron Maiden... I'm gonna be pruning that also.

Re: What is your favorite artist, and what do you have the most of?

Ok.. I figured out how to sort it by the time big_smile

 perl /home/Daenyth/mpc_playlist_stats | perl -ne '($h,$m,$s,$ar) = /^(\d\d):(\d\d):(\d\d) \d+ (.*)/ or next; $s += 60 * $m; $s += 60 * 60 * $h; $t{$ar}->{t}=$s; $t{$ar}->{l}=$_}{print $t{$_}->{l} foreach (sort {$t{$b}->{t} <=> $t{$a}->{t}} keys %t)' | head
61:31:19 422 moe.
46:09:41 587
37:21:38 407 Iron Maiden
14:58:20 189 Yngwie Malmsteen
14:49:24 175 Spin Doctors
14:14:46 174 Keller Williams
13:35:49 166 Stevie Ray Vaughan
13:21:44 218 Creedence Clearwater Revival
11:53:36 108 Jimi Hendrix
10:59:26 063 George Carlin

Damn that was a pain to figure out...
EDIT: And I could have saved myself a ton of trouble if I had done it inside the script to begin with.
here is the version with built-in sort by time.

174 Radiohead
140 Tool
120 Red Hot Chili Peppers
108 Clutch
074 Nirvana

057 Alice In Chains
054 Soundgarden

There's some of my collection there.  I'm trying to listen to more underground stuff, especially local bands here in Columbus (if I can find their CDs!  man that's hard)

Now I don't listen to U2 because I think Bono is God for his charity work.  I play guitar, and I look up to The Edge's minimalistic, precise guitar work which I like very much.

I forgot rafb doesn't save posts.

Just to clarify, this tallies the play LENGTH of tracks, not the actual playtime.

#!/usr/bin/perl
use strict;
use warnings;

open( MPC, "-|", "mpc playlist --format '%time% %artist%'" )
    or die "Unable to open mpc: $!\n";

my %stats;

while (<MPC>) {
    chomp;
    my ($min, $sec, $artist) = /^ \d+\) (\d+):(\d+) (.*)/ or next;

    $stats{$artist}->{time} += $min * 60 + $sec; # Time is in seconds
    $stats{$artist}->{number}++;
}

foreach my $artist (sort {$stats{$b}->{time} <=> $stats{$a}->{time}} keys %stats) {
    my @parts = gmtime($stats{$artist}->{time});
    printf ("%0.2d:%0.2d:%0.2d ", $parts[7] * 24 + $parts[2], @parts[1,0]); # HH:MM:SS
    printf "%0.3d %s\n", $stats{$artist}->{number}, $artist;
}
