[SOLVED] How to configure sound

I have installed arch and kde4.1. I visited this site :

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ALS … are_loaded

And everything went ok till the unmute section . I did not understand what IEC958 Center/rear means or, analog left /right or, line-in or, spdif output .

So i guess i screwed up kmix and now getting ridiculous sound. This is my kmix config :

http://i35.tinypic.com/294h0dc.jpg

I have a creative x-fi xtreme audio sound card. I think it is detected as the lspci shows :

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

Re: [SOLVED] How to configure sound

From what your kmix shows I don't believe that the correct driver has been loaded.  I just posted about a similar problem here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=5577
That post may give you some ideas.  When you open kmix there should be selections for main speaker and pcm and you should see some little buttons that light up green when you unmute them, IIRC.

And welcome to Arch. smile

Re: [SOLVED] How to configure sound

Thanks. I switched from ubuntu to arch hoping to learn more about my system. smile

But that post was not much help. Instead i did this :

I booted from kubuntu intrepid alpha 5 live cd. Then copied and pasted that alsa config into my systems alsa config . Then rebooted and wha! it is working. But i would like to know more about it. smile

Re: [SOLVED] How to configure sound

Sorry it wasn't much help  sad but all that matters is that you got it working. big_smile
It is strange though that following the wiki didn't solve your problem.  The documentation here is very good.

And could you please edit your original post and mark it as [SOLVED].

Re: [SOLVED] How to configure sound

Actually, the link you provided discussed about loading modules by modprobe.conf but the author did not provide how he solved his issue.

I was getting sound ok in kubuntu. So i thought why not copy/paste the configs of kubuntu. I did it and it's working.

The doc here is just amazing . They explain everything from ground up smile

But i mentioned in my post what i did not get. smile

However, the wiki mentioned never run alsaconf if i have a pci sound card. I am not sure copy/paste kubuntu configs did cause any problem. I mean this is not the arch way. So i am now browsing alsa wiki for more information about alsa. I think no harm was caused when i copy/pasted . Because alsaconf is a script afaik and new config might not invoke it. Not sure though smile
