Question is simple. Why is VLC 0.9.2 missing from ArchLinux repos ? Why do we still have 0.8.6i Janus ?

Dunno I want also VLC 0.9.2

Same here, when I install Arch soon I want VLC as my default media player. But I wouldn't say the same if I was using E17
BTW Does VLC still have that fullscreen bug in the new versions of VLC?

Oh, not again
If it ain't broke, broke it then fix it.

We're humans not machines. There's many more packages than VLC, and many of us have priorities outside Arch. The updates will come, but just be patient.
In the meantime, it's probably a trivial version bump using ABS -- don't bother replying if you're too lazy to use ABS.

Yes, on E17 it does. There is a version of emotion in subversion now that uses VLC as its back end. The last time I checked emotion wasn't very good though:

I have no problem waiting , I didn't know that's how long these king of things take (I hate nagging, so I'll know when to not ask now )

Maybe we should drop VLC or look for a TU maintianing it in [community]. ATM this package is orphaned which means it has no maintainer. (and noone seems to be interested in it)

Is it me or does this constantly come up. We should just make a thread about this!

I think we should make a sticky thread about package updates policies. This kind of threads come up too often and show that people don't read the wiki (and don't use the search button on the forums).

Some of you haven't been around long enough to know how much of a hassle VLC is on a rolling release distro. 0.8.6 was broken as much as it was running for a while. There was thread after thread that ended with "just recompile with ABS". VLC has been hypersensitive to changes in any external libraries, with FFmpeg probably being the biggest.

As far as i know, there was a bug on the servers, that caused many packages to get orphaned...

Yeah but looking in the PKGBUILD you will see
# Maintainer:
so it look like it was orphaned anyway.
Is there a working PKGBUILD floating around on the forums?
Edit: it is now in testing. Everybody thank Giovanni (voidnull)

Just a quick question. Now VLC comes with two different frontends (QT and GTK). Which one of these will be the default frontend of the pkg? I guess the person who is going to maintain the pkg should evaluate the posibility of providing two pkgs "vlc-gtk" and "vlc-qt". It'd be almost the same pkgbuild for both.

The procedure is always the same in Arch. Find out if they belong to a package(s). If they don't belong to any package, it's safe to overwrite with the -f switch. If they do belong to something, then file a bug report:
pacman -Qo /usr/include/dvbpsi/dr_02.h

why does it happen? i did not find any orphans with pacman -Qdt
Thanks for the solution though it worked..the new vlc is just awesome

I only have a partial answer to that question. I know that if some of the libraries were installed manually that this could happen. Then there's the case of the files were at one time symlinks that didn't get removed properly. I'm sure that there's others.

VLC 0.9.3 is compiled with libdvbpsi5 whereas previous versions required libdvbpsi4. The upgrade seems to conflict for this reason. Just remove libdvb4 before installing.

Uninstalling previous version of vlc and your dependences (pacman -Rscn vlc) works to me.
Edit: When I try update the system with pacman libdvbpsi4 conflicts with libdvbpsi and try remove libdvbpsi. The versions:
ladspa-1.13-1
fluidsynth-1.0.8-1
libdvbpsi-0.1.6-3
fribidi-0.10.9-1
libdvdnav-0.1.10-3

libmatroska-0.8.1-1
zvbi-0.2.26-1
libmodplug-0.8.4-1
