I think I messed something up. I had everything working good
except I couldn't hear any midi sound. I use sound blaster Audgigy
and I use kernel 2.6.7, kde3.2. The problem had somthing to do
with no synthesizer found or something like that. When I clicked
on a midi file Kmid would open and give an error saying that
another app is probably using /dev/midi and rosegardens
synthesizer would always crash when I open rosegarden.
Well I opened up control center , Sound and Multimedia,
Sound system and clicked on Use Midi Mapping which I probably
shouldn't have done. Now Sound Sysyem will not open up at all.
I rebooted numerous times but it will not open. The utility just
hangs and I have to kill it. I found out that the process, when
opening Sound System, is kcmshell. All the other utilities open
up fine under sound & multimedia. It's just the Sound System
utility that hangs or crashes. I tried forcing an upgrade of all of
kde thinking That Sound System got corupted or something. I
reinstalled alsa and arts. and sound system still hangs or crashes.
Despite the Sound System utility not opening my sound still works
fine except with midi sound. I can live without being able to
listen to midi for now, but I would like to be able to fix the
sound system utility from hanging and crashing when I open it.
Does anyone have a clue at what could be causing this? I have
tracked down the executible that sound system uses when
opening to opt/kde/share/applications/kde/arts.desktop
Thanks

this is the output from console when trying to open the
kde controle center Sound System utility.
kio (KSycoca): Trying to open ksycoca from /var/tmp/kdecache-root/ksycoca
kcmshell: [KCModuleInfo::KCModuleInfo(KSharedPtr<KService>)] /opt/kde/share/applications/kde/arts.desktop
kdeui (KCModule): KCModule kcmarts
Then it just hangs and nothing happens.

I feel stupid replying to my own posts but i fixed the sound system thing. I figured out that the /.kde/share/config/kcmmidirc file sets the midi mapping to true or false. I just set it back to false in the
file and now the sound system module opens without crashing or
hanging.

Yea it took lots of hunting to find the file that controls the gui
utility setting. I couldn't find anything in google or arch about
kde sound system freaking out over midi mapping. But I'm happy
I figured out how to put it back the way it was before I broke it hehe.
I almost got midi playing too. well at least midi files play in
kmid and rosegarden but without any sound. I tried muteing and
unmutting stuff in the alsa mixer with no luck. At least I'm back to
normal or alittle closer to getting something els working right
without my system totally spewing on me
