Arch is now 15 in Distrowatch (Data span 6 months).
We just surpassed Gentoo.

Let's all got and spam the refresh button on distrowatch so that arch can be on top. It worked for other distroes!

Como te va amigo?
Arch is never going to pass the 'user-friendly' distros in distrowatch. But it is debatable about whether OpenSUSE > Slackware or Ubuntu > Debian in the amount of users, because normally the users of advanced distros like Arch and Debian are far more knowledgeable, thus these users normally don't need much support, making it less probable for these users to come to the official site or forums.
Distrowatch's ranks are statistics, but they don't prove much.
Happy to get up there in distrowatch anyway ![]()
Un saludo,

Quick, everyone hit the Gentoo page on dw.
My roomates said they were going to get me rims for Christmas, or a CB radio so I can talk to other car beds; that'll be hot. Might get a stereo, too. My sister said I should get an alarm.

From memory, it hit #11 on the 3 month span after the last release. All in all, it means nothing....

I would rather it was below #50 but that's just crazy me ![]()

Distrowatch, ugh.
Can't anyone run a GNU/Linux website without being an annoying, opinionated, egomaniac?
Offline
No, which is why Distrowatch is as good a GNU/Linux website as any other.
Now, if we assume that websites dedicated to Linux help it develop, we can conclude that Distrowatch is a good thing.

The problem with dw rankings is that it doesn't convey it's purpose very well, assuming it has one more than assigning an integer to a distro name. All it does is rank the traffic that passes through its site, nothing more. Plus, it's assuming that daily traffic to the site is in some way the end all proper way to rank. What if a distro's site hosts nothing but an about and a download page, but has a thriving irc channel and mailing list?
To further the point of irrelevance, it's no secret hpd's are greatly swayed by release announcements, so the bias will be geared to distro's that have frequent installer releases.
I agree that dedicated linux sites improve it's visibility to the internet, but we should consider the quality of that visibility. Showcasing a petty ranking system doesn't exactly help the cause.

Tbh, I don't want Arch to be in the top, sorry ![]()
I love Arch too much to see it be disrespected like that.

Oh what! I thought it ranks by checking the traffic of the official distro sites.
Thats crap, never looking at the rankings anymore, thats for sure...

How is a high ranking disrespectful? Why is the "it got popular, so now I must hate it" mentality so common? How does a distrowatch ranking matter period, regardless of whether it's low or high?
It's like people who want something until they get it.. then all of a sudden they don't want it anymore. I'll never understand certain dispositions I guess..

As a statistician, I can assure you the number is much higher than that

I don't think Distrowatch is so lame. The rankings are useless, but I check Distrowatch periodically to see if there are any interesting new distros, or if there's an update to SysRescue and a few other utility-oriented "distros".
I think Distrowatch does a good job of "watching" the distro release scene, which, judging by its name, is what it's trying to do. Also, on the individual pages for each distro, the release history can be useful, as well as the distro package list, if kept current. It's also a good place to find links for reviews.
I also think it's cool to see the country of origin for a distro, since this shows how international the Linux scene is.

Oh, I completely agree with you; distrowatch does a great job monitoring distributions. There aren't many that can rival it. It's just the ranking system that seems to drag its name through the mud.

It's easier to have sympathy for the underdog than for the one on top. That's all there's to it.
And I agree with haxit. Too much exposure, too much noobs. Too many stupid topics, too many stupid questions.I guess I can be quite negative

So that's why a distro should never adopt a graphical installer.
