Why 2.6.0 is called devel?
Offline
The gimp package hasn't been updated yet.
gimp-devel use the latest release whether it's developement or stable. It will take a few months before the 2.7 developement branch is available. Meanwhile, gimp-devel will use the 2.6 branch.

I have the same question. Why 2.6 is development?.
I understand the explication from Snowman, but let's think something...when version 2.7.x (development) is release, then gimp-devel need to change, but gimp need to change too to 2.6. And a user that use the latest stable, in this case gimp-devel 2.6, needs to delete gimp-devel and install gimp in that moment.
I feel is a little too complicated without reason. Stable is stable and development is development
P.D. Sorry for my english

Just to be clear, 2.6 is the stable branch. Ideally, both gimp and gimp-devel should be now at the same 2.6.X version and they should be kept up-to-date to the latest 2.6 version until the 2.7 developpement branch is released. When the 2.7 branch will be released, gimp-devel will follow it and be updated to 2.7.X. Gimp will remain with the 2.6 branch until 2.8 is released.
The problem here is that gimp and gimp-devel are maintained by two different dev. I maintain gimp-devel and had time to update my package. The dev who maintains gimp hadn't updated his package yet. This is why gimp is still at 2.4.X when, in fact, it should be at the same version than gimp-devel. I'll discuss the situation with gimp's maintainer to have one of us maintain both packages or to work together.
The reason we do this is to make it easier for the user. If you want to stick with the stable releases, use gimp. If you want to use or don't mind using development versions, use gimp-devel. Ideally, gimp should be at the latest stable version and gimp-devel at the latest developpement or stable version. Once we get ourselves organized, there should be no need to switch back and forth between gimp-devel and gimp.

Snowman that explained a lot, i understand now. I hope the two maintainer cooperate. Thanks

Update:
I contacted gimp's maintainer. I'll be updating both gimp and gimp-devel until 2.7 is out. If I have time, and if the update goes smoothly, both will be updated to 2.6.1 sometime next week.
