does anyone know how to get the file manager off the desktop. When I start e17 I get all the files that I have in ~/Desktop shown as icons on my background...it is plain annoying

Sure. Took me half an hour to figure it out - you have to unload the file manager module (or disable "show desktop icons" in the file manager module preferences).

is the e17 file manager safe to use again? Last I heard it was deleting/moving random files

I use it with no problems at all, however i use that file manager only for showing icons on desktop. Does anyone know a better way?

Configuration -> Configuration Panel -> File Manager -> File Manager -> Show Desktop Icons

not the same problem, but a sort of related - i am not able to move the icons (change the position on screen) with draging, but only when I use some e17 themes (e.g. the new rasterman can't, but the detour can do it);
could you give me any tip?

No it is still not safe to use though it seems to have improved a bit. Copying things to another (external) harddrive still gives me wrong filenames (lowercase instead of uppercase for example). Sometimes even not all files are copied...
Above was last time I checked little less than a month ago or so.

Do you get the rasterman theme straight from enlightenment svn repos or do you use the one he posted on his fileserver a couple of months ago?

The svn version didn't have the build script a week ago, and the old build script from the copy that pressh sent me doesn't work.
But, if it will build and you don't want microscopic menus (assuming it's not fixed), search for the string "/* this is the actual text label for the menu item */" in theme.edc. In that section you'll see the font declaration (font: "Sans,Edje-Vera"). Right above that is 'size:'. Change that to something like 10 before you build.

you don't need a build script, just use something like this in a PKGBUILD (or manually if you want)
edje_cc theme.edc b_and_w.edj
install -Dm644 b_and_w.edj \
$pkgdir/usr/share/enlightenment/data/themes/b_and_w.edj

Oh sure, go for the easy, logical, and functional solution.

The svn version of b_and_w is really nice, but still can't move the desktop icons
