How to write a plugin for xfce4's panel??

I guess, it must be a xxx.so and written in gtk or sth. But I want some detail. Can anyone tell me how to get the documents or instruction? Thank you very much!;)

http://www.xfce.org/documentation/api/libxfce4panel/ seems to be right at the core, but I guess without GLib/GTK experience it's a bit hard.

Are you sure you really have to write your own plugin?

Thank you very much! I'm learning gtkmm and just want to try to write some code.
I want a plugin that can display lyric of the playing song of MPD. Is there such a plugin already? I can't find it!

extra/xfce4-genmon-plugin 3.1-4 (xfce4-goodies)
     plugin that monitors customizable programs stdout for the Xfce4 panel

I don't know that plugin but if could couple it with some shell script magic... mission accomplished.
