Abiword font problem

Hello,
I just re-installed Arch, I have an issue which makes Abiword unuseable now;
The cursor in Abiword is tiny altough the font size is not, when I type characters they appear with the correct font size, but the cursor only moves that tiny size, making all characters overlap each other.
Does anybody know how to fix this problem,
Thanks

Re: Abiword font problem

Are other GTK applications suffering from the same problem for either of you, particularly in text areas? Also, have you tried a different GTK theme?

Re: Abiword font problem

No, only Abiword suffers from this problem and selecting another does does not help.

Re: Abiword font problem

Try renaming ~/.AbiSuite to something else and restart abiword.

No I'm sorry, that still doesn't do it.

Re: Abiword font problem

I narrowed the problem down, it's a font issue, I installed ttf-freefont and ttf-ms-fonts who both work. That is enough for me, but still smile

Well, crap. That was the easy solution.

Assuming that the problem is with abiword and not something with GTK or fonts, it may be that there's something wrong with normat.awt or one of the localization files in /usr/share/abiword-2.6/templates. If normal.awt gets screwed up it can cause all sorts of headaches since it's the default template abiword uses.

Re: Abiword font problem

I haven't used Abiword for awhile but when I tried today, I found the same cursor problem others have reported and so far I haven't seen where there has been a fix reported.

However, I did stumble across a decent work-around when I opened up an existing file and noticed the cursor was acting properly again.

So one way appears is to make yourself a file... call it abiword...

touch abiword

. Then each time you want to use Abiword, you open the blank file 'abiword' but save it as something other than abiword. Naturally I haven't tried all the various functions of the program out but like I said above, the cursor, highlighting, etc. is back to normal again.

Re: Abiword font problem

A  quick google suggests that this problem is only with archlinux currently. Has someone already filed a bug report?

I can't really narrow the problem, since my system is quite fresh and abiword acted weird since installing.

Thanks wolfvorkian for the solution, helps a lot since I'm on a slow connection with no way of getting openoffice just now to save me.

Re: Abiword font problem

i just had this same exact issue

i figured out that all you need to do is change the font and all goes back to normal
(you can even change it, then change it back to what it was on before and it works)

Re: Abiword font problem

Well its been a long time, but I just recently installed abiword again and ran into the same issue.  I got sick of changing the font every time I stared abiword so I followed the advice from skottish in the above posts.

I opened /usr/share/abiword-2.6/templates/normal.awt and changed the font from Times New Roman to Helvetica. (apparently it can be anything except times new roman, don't ask me why)

After this everything works perfect.

Re: Abiword font problem

Just did another arch install and ran into the same issue yet again.  This time I found a better solution.

Install ttf-ms-fonts and run fccache -vf to update font cache. Now abiword works perfectly:)

This worked perfectly, thank you!! Although I changed it to Arial instead and your other suggestion, which I tried first, didn't work at all.

Edit: For no reason it has reverted to how it was. I think it must be a problem with X. Stuck.
