Hello,
At my place of work there is a paradigm of serving lots of data via raid arrays over the LAN.
Our main sysadmin suggested using "am-utils" and copying the configuration info from existing
machines. While most larger distributions (redhat, debian, etc.) seem to have packages for
am-utils, Arch Linux does not seem to have any:
1) Why not?
2) What would people advise doing to get the functionality up and running with my laptop?
thanks.
(I did try mounting by hand via nfs. With an appropriate entry into fstab and a few daemons
running I can mount one of the raid disks I am trying to use, but then I cannot execute any
simple commands, like "cd /hostxx/raid/..." or "ls /hostxx/raid/.../..." ) so it doesn't really work.)

When mounting by hand, did you give user read+execute perms? That could explain why you couldn't issue those commands. As for the am-utils, you could make your own package and submit to the AUR, or request a package in the appropriate section of the forums if you so wish.

Yes, appropriate privileges were set in fstab.
Unfortunately, I lack the expertise to create a package for general use.
I will post the request, however, won't that take a while even if someone
is interested in making the package?
thanks

Not necessarily, in fact, I'll take a look at it when I get a chance to see if I can make one. No guarantees of course.
