laptop is running at 72 celsius?!

I have a Thinkpad T61p w/ T9500. It seems like the CPU shouldn't get nearly this hot! I have ACPI, Laptop Mode, CPU Frequency Utils (set to min 2ghz max 2.65ghz) and all that. Is there some way I can undervolt the CPU or something so it's not so worryingly hot? Both cores are running near 100% because I am doing some serious compiling right now, but even so, it doesn't seem at all like my CPU should be reaching these sort of temperatures.

The thermal spec of that processor is 105 C max so is within spec, I've had my T7700 running at 80 C under full load on my fanless system with no problems. Maybe there is some issue with the fan or vent blocking.

Seems fine to me too, you have a cool machine actually. wink
You should only start to worry when there isn't difference in temperature between idle and 100% load at the same frequency like it was for me (changed after MB replacement) or when your power brick gets so hot  that it makes a really load crack because you charge completely empty batteries and let the processor run at 100% load at the same time (not my laptop fortunately. smile

Re: laptop is running at 72 celsius?!

Laptops tend to get hot anyways, I mean just look at how slim of a case the processor has to run inside of.  I guess the mobile Intel CPUs only run at cool temperatures when SpeedStep lowers the frequency.  When you're compiling, SpeedStep runs the frequency all the way up to your CPU's max and that's where you get the 72C from.  But I wouldn't worry, most Intel CPUs have comparatively higher thermal specifications compared to AMDs.

Re: laptop is running at 72 celsius?!

Just remembered that I have set the maximum frequency my CPU does to 1.6 GHz with 2.1 GHz possible, but that is only for noise reasons, and it is enough to watch h264 or mp4 videos. I use the kde4-powerdevil aggressive-dynamic setting and cpufreq-utils to specify the maximum frequency in /etc/rc.local ('cpufreq-set -u 1.6GHz').
