i think Partition Magic will do that from within windows

Vista has its own resizing tool, but for the life of me I cannot tell you where it is. It is somewhere in the disk management tools.
Resizing from outside Vista might render Vista unbootable. Whether that is bad is up to you to decide

If you are looking for a command line tool, ntfsresize might be the right answer (I haven't tried it!).

DM is in Vista right click on computer [Start] and select manage
From what I have read you will have problems if ntfs has page files etc....
gparted would not work in Ubuntu starting to think backup and repartition under Linux [grrr!]
Partition magic free?

+1 for ntfsresize. I've had stability issues with Norton's PartitionMagic, and so I would definitely not recommend it for this task, as this deals with data on your partitions.

I tried gparted and it failed wondering now if I should just install linux [make two partitions!] then install vista? or maybe the other way round use a live cd to create two partitions then load Vista first.... got to reinstall drivers for vista [grrr!!!!!]
Did have Wubi installed but it used up too many cpu cycles, there is another run linux under windows [other than vmware qemu vmplayer!!!]
I really hate using Vista!!! but I need it for some apps and devices I have....

To resize an ntfs partition (XP for me) I used ntfsresize first to shrink the filesystem then fdisk
if you use fdisk do not forget to change the units to sectors
here's a link about how to resize using Vista tools

Defrag first!!!
Still thinking of backing up stuff and blasting Vista out first.... more at home using Linux can fdisk to divide up drive then install Vista again ;-(
But will read up Gentoo guide first ;-)
Thanks

Ok, had to wipe vista :-)
Set up two partitions [split drive into two!]
Vista would not load onto second partition so had to load it first
Now got a free sweet dreamland type space for Linux :-)
Thanks for all your help
