So I'm having trouble with compiz fusion! I have never ever had trouble getting this baby to work but now here I am. So I installed everything except emerald and did a metacity --replace in the place of emerald --replace but doing so disables all of compiz and when i switch to compiz which enables plugin my window deco goes away. My question is how do I get my window deco to stay and same with plugins WITHOUT emerald?

you need to install the 'compiz-decorator-gtk' package. works fine with 'fusion-icon'...

How does ubuntu run metacity and compiz fusion? I really don't want to change my deco.

Metacity and Compiz don't run simultaneously, they are both window managers. As konni says, install the compiz-decorator-gtk package and set the decorator plugin to load it, that will give you Metacity decorations for Compiz.

sorry to bump this.
I'm trying to use metacity decorations as well. gtk-window-decorations --replace succesfully replaces my emerald theme while maintaining the windows effects. However, it gives my Cairo window decorations which I can't change. I looked for the /apps/gwd/use_metacity_theme key in gconf. It wasn't there by default but I was able to add it and set it to true. This removes the Cairo window decorations, but leaves me with no decorations instead. I would like the Alduin gtk/metacity theme, but I can get it to work with compiz.
Any suggestions?

I got it working by running the following command:
gconftool-2 --install-schema-file /usr/share/gconf/schemas/gwd.schemas
I did this as my regular user and not as root. I don't know what would have been the proper one to use though. This added the /apps/gwd section to gconf, enabling it made the decorations disappear for me as well. I reloaded compiz and everything worked just fine.
I am wondering if I should file a bug on this. Aren't these schemas files supposed to be installed by pacman or something? I am brand new to archlinux so I don't know if this was intended, although I don't see why this would be...
EDIT: I posted a bug at http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/11855 ... apparently, this has been fixed in compiz-decorator-gtk 0.7.8-4
