Searching for "the perfect soundcard"

Hi

Im looking for a fully linux compatible, no propritary drivers needed, soundcard for use in a semi low budget radio production.
Im not very audiophile myself, but some of my fellow radio technicians keeps insisting on balanced in/out.
In time we would like to digitize the sound, but for now, our mixer can only output analog.

So
- Full alsa compatible
- Balanced in/out
- digital in/out
- prefered PCI(e*) - but usb is acceptable

Price <=200€ (~$275)

Above mentioned is my preferred setup, but i am willing to compromize on analog input (just to put pressure on the guy thats going to buy a new mixer), So tell me what you use for your (semi)professional audio equipment.

Re: Searching for "the perfect soundcard"

actually our current soundcard is an old soundblaster live, but I would prefere something a bit more specialized. The edirol looks ok, but i would still prefere an internal card

Maybe a M-Audio Audiophile 2496. Not everything you are looking for, but, a nice card. Capable of bit perfect output too.

You definitely want something from M-Audio, then. They produce audiophile quality sound cards AND support Linux through OSS. I have their Revolution 5.1 and am quite pleased with the sound quality.

Re: Searching for "the perfect soundcard"

Are there only OSS support with M-Audio, and are all ports supported? It seems to be the way to go tough. The fact that I have to resort to my local music shop instead of a hardware dealer tells me that it got the audiophile marked covered.

I use Alsa w/the Audiophile 2496 which uses the envy24control for control/mixer (nice). I've also used the Revo 5.1 w/Alsa (no envy24control the best I recall) still a nice card.
