Re: Openoffice 3.0 freezing

I am having problems with the new OpenOffice release. When I start it I get the following errors:

(process:5192): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2458: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:5192): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_type_interface_add_prerequisite: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_INTERFACE (interface_type)' failed

(process:5192): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed

(process:5192): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed

I have already removed the openoffice directories in ~, added that line in /etc/profile and installed libxslt, but I still can't start it.

Ah, thanks for pointing that out, now it's working (before, it opened, but when I clicked a menu item, it totally froze).

Re: Openoffice 3.0 freezing

But is there a way to have export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde AND openoffice not freezing?

Because when I use "gnome" icons are disappearing whenever I hover my mouse over them. I read (and tested) that forcing the "kde" desktop solved that problem, but now - the solution is given away for the stability.

I'm also having that problem. I've installed libxslt, exported OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome. Do I have to have openjdk6? Because I have installed jre. Is it the same?

I thought KDE integration had been discontinued in OOo 3.0.

You don't need openjdk6.  One you have added the "export OOO_F..." to /etc/profile (or the like), you need to source the file, either manually or by logging out/in.

Sorry but it didn't work. I'll just wait until OOo 3 is realeased officially. Probably someone will be able to explain the problem then.

Re: Openoffice 3.0 freezing

Check the spelling in the "export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome" statement.  You have exactly the same error message as everybody who did not export that variable.

Re: Openoffice 3.0 freezing

Wierd, I had posted but now it's gone.

I'm wondering, OO 3 will need to have the export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP command set? I use dark themes mostly (GTK) and I'm wondering if OO has permanently changed so it will always use the native GTK theme?? I was always able to not pass that command and have OO look bright and clear and easy to read, but this is unfortunate sad

Re: Openoffice 3.0 freezing

Well, I got it working more or less. Now it doesn't freeze but the icons in the toolbars and the menu names tend to disappear. Also plasma starts acting a bit weird (funny colors in the panel).
I wonder why the OOo guys dropped the KDE support, one of the most used DE in linux. Many people will be disappointed. If they want to become the ultimate office suite (better than MSO), I don't think that dropping support for such a big community like the KDE one is the right way to achieve it. Doesn't make sense to me :S

Cheers,

Re: Openoffice 3.0 freezing

I have problems with visual artefacts too (disappearing menus, tabs looking weird). Not to mention that gnome looks just crappy with buttons a la 1985 (windows 3.0).
I am not blaming Arch devs obviously, but if they can fix this (as fixed oo.org 2.4) would be fantastic.

Anyway, I am back with 2.4
At the moment, I don't see any compelling reasons for openoffice upgrade

I haven't looked into it much, but I was under the impression that it's not "KDE support" that's been dropped. It's only "KDE integration." I had always assumed that, at least in the case of OOo, DE integration was primarily, if not entirely, cosmetic, i.e., taking on the theme or icons of the DE.

Is there anything more functional about so-called "KDE integration" that we've lost?

At any rate, my problems with disappearing menu titles and such went away completely when I zapped the "export
OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde" line from my ~/.bashrc.

OOo 3.x handles the newer MS docx format. I don't believe OOo 2.x did, or at least not without a plugin (which I was never able to get to work).

you can get plugins for oo.org 2.4 for export/import of docx (for example http://blog.mypapit.net/2007/05/how-to- … eorg.html)

Still most popular format is doc/xls

Is there anything more functional about so-called "KDE integration" that we've lost?

personally I am not in the favor of mid 80' looks of gnome menus. That is more than 20 years back. Other than this gnome or kde integration provides nothing.

The problem appears when using gtk-qt-engine. I switched to "QtCurve" style in gtk-qt-engine settings manager and now OOo just works fine.

Your are right!. That fixed the disappearing icons!! smile

Although plasma is still showing extrange colors from time to time. Maybe kde's fault? Qt's fault? nvidia's fault? haha

I had the problems as well and running the program with "OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome soffice" fixed it. The odd thing is - I have the export command in rc.local. Had it with 2.4 before set to kde and changed it to gnome after the update to 3.0. Does the command not work in rc.local? Then maybe the wiki needs to be addapted. What else could I do to set the environment variable globally?

Try this in /etc/profile

export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome

Re: Openoffice 3.0 freezing

I had a freezing problem with OpenOffice (when trying open a document) that was fixed by going to tools -> options -> general -> and selecting 'Use Openoffice.org dialogs'. Then after restarting openoffice and testing that it didn't freeze, I could actually go back and unselect that and it was fine. Some weird gtk bug, I think. Not sure if these problems are related or not.....
