I am thinking about a project which may or may not be possible but which I thought of while I was in the shower moaning (no) over the horrible performance of the 2.6.26 kernel on my machine. From time to time I will update my machine and it will pull in a new kernel and I will notice that either the system has become noticeably slower or some other little annoyance, so, that made me think; what if there was an archive of Vanilla (Arch) kernels?
Is it possible for one to keep a web based archive of Arch kernels as AUR/style packages? If so this would be fantastic! Yes I know a user can do it by hand but in case of emergency or laziness a nice pacman -U to a formely fast system would be wonderful
I'd like to try my hand at such a project but I wonder.. is it possible? - will the kernel work with almost all machines as it does when you install from CD/REPOS? - Or if I started making packages (without any modifications at all I will copy the existing kernels options for each stable version.) would they only perfom well on my machine?

OT: I think we should start a sticky thread in the off topic forum with quotes like that from the forums ![]()

Just create a repo of your own and host it somewhere. I'm pretty sure someone wrote a web view to a repo. The aur code is available, but its probably a bit heavier than you would need.

Its not like they're compiled on special "generic" machines or anything. If you don't change any kernel options, it should build the same package, AFAIK.
In addiiton, you can get the PKGBUILDs for previous kernel releases from the CVS entries under kernel26.

One issue you'll need to solve - in a normal repo, there is only one package with any particular name i.e. kernel26 in this case. If you want a repo with various different kernel packages, installable via pacman -S, you will need to rename them e.g. kernel26-<date> or kernel26-<kernel_version> or some other unique identifier.
A simpler alternative would be to use the normal naming scheme and let users install their chosen kernel via pacman -U <full_path_to_package>.

That's exactly what I plan to do - Binary/Installable (pacman -U) + PKBUILD/SOURCE/Install files - most probably on tree view on the web for the moment .. after that ill see how it could be used from wget/pacman etc etc.
Well thanks for the info .. I'll post again if I get something up.

I've been running a mirror since July and haven't deleted any old packages. http://schlunix.org/archlinux/
Right now there are 6 kernel versions. Soon to be 7 when it syncs and gets 2.6.27
The Internet...? Is that thing still around?
