I think this is in the right spot...
I am interested in trying out arch and would like to know if there is anything not in the beginner's guide that i should know
Offline
I don't think so.
Try it and ask for help when you encounter problems
Do you have experience with other Linux distros? If yes, there shouldn't be any problem.
My way to happyness:
cat ~/problems > /dev/null

+1
The guide has pretty much of all that you need to know. Go on and ask later if something doesn't work.:)

Yes, just one that comes to the top of my mind. I don't think the install disks have updated, so before you can update your system, you will need to run one command, just read http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56431 It's not a big deal, but it will be important. This usually doesn't happen... and it really isn't a big deal at all, just something you should be aware of when trying to upgrade so you aren't taken off guard ![]()

someone asked earlier if i have had previous experience with linux
yes i know my way around ubuntu decently, but thats really a fire and forget type of distro...

Welcome to the forums.
It's funny, Arch is too. It doesn't seem like it at first, but after a while you'll find yourself in a cycle of tinkering. Everything will work just like it should, but that one pixel in the corner that really, really wants to be green should be dealt with. And you will deal with it!

@skottish: you forgot to say: " and after dealing with it this one pixel will eat tacos too"
@jimi_hendrix: don't worry about the tacos, just do a forum search for "tacos" ![]()

@koch i did...which post will give me the story out of the three pages?
Offline
oops, that much? never tried it by myself.
ok, forget about it. it is kind of a joke around here. you will read this word from time to time.
you also could ask cactus about tacos.
it is very unusual that someone mentions tacos here in forum and he isn't in the thread 10 minutes later. ![]()
oh, and don't be surprised if you see a guy here lifting a car above his head...we know him.
welcome in the world of archlinux. it is fun and it works as skottish said.

oh, a "fischkopf" (joke between germans)
[ich nehm mal an, du kommst aus niedersachsen. da muss ich dich als schwabe wohl mal eher als witz sehen

sorry for off-topic, just had to tell him something.
back to topic: read the latest news, have a look at the link crouse postet but besides that everything should work fine.
if you run into problems (hardware, etc) just ask here or in IRC (freenode, #archlinux).
you can also have a look at the mailinglists or the bug-tracker.
the links are on the front page.

It's in the Beginner's Guide, but I'll reiterate: DON'T PANIC! Installing and configuring Arch is really quite easy, provided that your hardware is fairly Linux-friendly.
By the way, don't worry about the tacos. If you spend any length of time on this forum, you'll figure it out.
(perhaps we should add an article on tacos to the wiki, to help out new converts
)
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Yeah, at first when your left with nothing but a bare terminal it can seem imtimidating. But the beginers guide covers pretty much everything, and you will learn a lot about the basics of linux in the process of setting it up, and after you get a fully working setup, you will never be forced to reinstall, the beauty of a rolling release system ![]()

I am very sorry for posting another OT-message. (it is another joke between Germans)
@koch: You do live south of river Main? OMG, they all vote for CSU, they eat these purulent Weisswursts down there (yes, look up in your dictionary what purulent means), and they all drink cat's piss which they call beer.
Hey, we have this thread on shitty-music in the German forum - Let's meet there!
And I have a riddle for you:
Der kalte Mond in voller Pracht,
hört die Schreie in der Nacht.
Na? Na?

There's a lot of stuff you'll need that's not directly in the Beginners Guide, but only in the sense that the BG is to get you set up. For example, I needed the following Wiki pages to get everything fixed up:
- Openbox
- MPD
- Synaptics
- Pypanel
- Flash on Arch64
- ABS
- Cpufrequtils
- Wicd
Basically as you install stuff, there's a good chance you'll need the wiki page on that item, but that may be the most incredible thing about Arch. While Ubuntu had me trolling the forums for help, 95% of any problems you'll have getting Arch ready can be solved by looking at the Wiki.
And in the midst of such perfection,
I can't help but feel diseased.

Hah! We do have one, but only US soldiers and their affiliated get there, it's inside the patch barracks in Vaihingen ![]()
Uhoh, so I re-enabled my account after years just to tell you this, I don't even know if you're still active.

Funny this should be resurrected.
The day this was posted I had breakfast in Heidelberg after staying in Ladenberg.
Ridiculously cold but my thermometer is set a little high for Deutschland.
Next time I go back it will be in the summer time.
As for tacos in Australia..
I guess it depends on your preferred filling.

You can still post the answer to the riddle - with one or two additional hints, koch solved it in about ten minutes in the German forum. And btw, did you know that koch is exactly that - a cook in a restaurant in Heidelberg. But I don't think that he prepares breakfast - seems to be more in the night-shift or something like that.

You should read all the stickies here and in the newbie part of the forum, there are some rather important info in some of them.
