laptop fan & X

hi

i noticed after doing an upgrade last week that the fan on my dell m1330 is constantly starting and stopping. it's mildly irritating, but worse than that, it's rather worrying.

it stops if i quit x (/etc/rc.d kdm3 stop)

can anyone help me control it?
