Audio debugging on a thinkpad T400

Hi there -

I'm new to Arch, just got my thinkpad T400 up and running (and finally windows-free) over the weekend. So far things have been working out quite nicely, but every now and again I run into a little blip that I can't figure out myself. This is one of those.

btw, lspci says my sound device is: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

My audio playback ability from CD's is very erratic. I am clearly able to get audio. aplay produces sound just fine from the terminal, and I can even get flash-based programs (ie Pandora) to output sound beautifully.

But. When I use sound-juicer to play a CD, every several seconds audio will drop out for just a second or two, but completely. And although I can tell the discs are being read, no sound at all comes out when using GRIP or cdtool. Obviously this is a configuration problem, but I don't even know where to look.

Can you provide any advice?

Thanks,
