I can't understand why there are so many Openbox users in these forums, why not Fluxbox, isn't it pretty much the same. I'm going to use Openbox as my main WM since everyone else uses it (Since there would be more support here). tongue

Same reason a lot of people use Ubuntu: lots of support. Given two nearly identical systems, I opt for the one with the most support.

Re: Checking out some WMs, need advice

If you really look for efficiency, you should try FVWM. Just as I was never really content with other Linux distributions before Arch, I was never completely content with other window managers, although I tried many of them. The only downside is that you need to learn how to configure it, but this has to be done only once.

My strategy is working with lots of pages (desktops), between which I switch swiftly with the keyboard. My window manager is absolutely unobtrusive, without even a taskbar or desktop icons (you can have these with FVWM). In fact, I have windows often maximized, without the desktop being visible at all. I find this very efficient.

awesome3 is a great wm, because it offers both tiling and floating views. i use tiling view for terminals, full screen view for firefox and thunderbird adn developing tools, other programs float.

it also has built in system tray and clock. so you don't need to install seperate panel applet.

It's funny because that's only a good thing depending on the perspective wink I've seen some people say they like openbox because it ships with no panel.

Well, you can easily not have the awesome statusbar (wibox) shown. It's very modular.

yea I know and it doesn't only apply to awesome.. nevertheless it's still a reason some people give for liking openbox, regardless of how much sense it may make wink

There's been some discussion about stump and ratpoison in here.

Re: Checking out some WMs, need advice

I've given ratpoison a shot.  I can see why people like it, because it's extremely efficient once you learn how to use all of the
keybindings effectively. The only problem I had with it is it was ugly and I prefer my customized fluxbox keybindings.

Re: Checking out some WMs, need advice

@Cyrusm: You can bind to the top with e.g.
definekey top KP_Left prev
This should make anything possible.

And yeah it is pretty nice isn't it. Even without frames/groups it's very usable.

edit: one thing I don't like is when you do get "some tiling going on" with frames you can't select another frame with the mouse. Same thing for Stumpwm.

StumpWM can do mouse focus.

A few days ago I tried it out with just clicking. I am browsing through the documentation now but can't find anything. How do you do this?

You set *mouse-focus-policy* to either :ignore, :sloppy, or :click, depending on what you want.

So what would you suggest using for a person that wants the similar functionality and looks as Openbox, but is a tiling WM?

Well, I think "similar functionality" becomes a rather loose term when comparing a floating WM and a tiling WM. I personally saw quite a bit of similarities between PekWM(which is a *box WM) and Awesome when I did the switch to Awesome. I had already used WMII for a couple of years earlier though.

Re: Checking out some WMs, need advice

I tried Awesome 2.whatever and couldn't get the floating to work, which is pretty important for working with The GIMP.  Otherwise I LOVED it.  I'm using PekWM now and I like it.
