AMD cards are getting rly good nowadays, right?? Is there anything from AMD about legacy hd234k support ?
Their last release was a very polite 'f**k you' to users of old radeons users.

This sums it up.
But I will say, as someone who owns the HD 6870 for the past ~2 years. The experience under Linux has gotten slightly better and better. It used to be unbearable, and now it competes with nvidia very much so. Radeon cards will give you more performance per dollar, but it used to be that their drivers were garbage. I can't say that with a straight face now because I've enjoyed recent performance quite a bit. There have been quirks, though. If running a full screen game, the gui often freezes when you alt+tab out of a game. I have a older nvidia system that does not do this. There are also occasional graphical glitches you see with radeon over nvidia. But this is all becoming less common.

Good idea, I'll try and let you know about it.
So, I have tried and i have the same problem on FluxBox with xcompmgr that I have with XFCE and its compositor.

Ok, you should understand that, for the rest this is error: could not open a file.
I'm seeing this now too, and an -Syy doesn't help. The site with the DB download now appears to be a link farm: http://apocalypsus.net/

A couple of bad news about xserver 1.14 which you may already know but it's still important ant worth to mention...
xserver 1.14 was released yesterday, and while it's not as pretty as many would like to see (no XWayland, no dynamic switching) it's coming with a new ABI and so it won't work with current catalysts.
Now this news would not be so bad if only ubuntu 13.04 would come with xserv 1.14. It turns out that upcoming ubu 13.04 will be served on xser 1.13, the reason of this move was described on phoronix as:
The basis for this decision is the AMD Catalyst driver not being ready and, of course, Canonical's heavy focus now on phones and tablets. Bryce says, "the general interest of avoiding disrupting folks working on phone/tablet, we're going to hold off on uploading xserver to the archive for a month or two. We may end up skipping 1.14.0 entirely and wait for 1.14.1, but we'll see."
While Phoronix isn't providing more informations and is not quoting anyone's words about not-ready-catalyst (so it's easy to call it a fud since latelly amd has no problems with providing xserv support on time) the information about tablets/phone seems to be a true and could be the real reason.
Ubuntu seems to be a real show stopper latelly - not supporting Wayland, developing own display server (Mir), not providing latest software, huh...

I updated my pacman.conf as directed in Arch wiki and then added the GPG key with the following commands.

Looks fine (without the [b ] tags of course).
Have you tried pacman -Syy?
man pacman:
"Passing two --refresh or -y flags will force a refresh of all package lists even if they appear to be up to date."

Precisely that's what worked. But I had tried that yesterday, and it wasn't working at all.

I guess there was an issue on server side, it works fine now.

Hello,
I'm new to the forum and also with archlinux.
I have a problem with my two graphics cards 6870. They are not recognized when I do a fglrxinfo :
Error: unable to open display (null)
.
I followed the procedure that is in the wiki (xorg 1.12 and catalyst by Vi0L0).
I looked quickly xorg log and there are errors http://pastebin.com/u9TDmbrw
lsmod | grep fglrx
fglrx 5089921 121
amd_iommu_v2 7400 1 fglrx
button 4670 1 fglrx
If someone has an idea.
Thanks

Hi,
I am sorry for posting this but I am encountering problems with wirephire.com repository.
I am getting this error: database file for 'xorg112' does not exist
and a timeout error.
Also for catalyst-hd234k.
I just installed Archlinux but without AMD legacy drivers my laptop burns (HD4200).
The server is simply down or I have to check something else than repository addresses in /etc/pacman.conf ?
Thank you for your time.

AFAIK, pacman uses curl to retrieve files from the net. Try to download directly the database file with curl:
$ curl -O http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst-hd234k/x86_64/catalyst-hd234k.db
Try for i686 if you are on a 32 bit system.

I was having the trouble and it got solved yesterday on its own. Not sure how to solve, but just my 2 cents - I found that Arch was best for HD345k series graphic cards. I have a similar card and I found Arch to be best supported compared to Ubuntu, Fedora.

I hope that the problem vanishes itself because I don't know what to look toward.

@yell!: let's see if it is a problem with your cached pacman data. Try to remove catalyst repo entries from you pacman.conf, then pacman -Syy and pacman -Scc (this will delete all your pacman cache). Then add again catalyst entries to pacman.conf and pacman -Syy.

xorg-server 1.14 hit [testing]. I'm afraid that catalyst-dkms is going to be purged from official repos, since Ubuntu 13.04 is going to be shipped with xorg-server 1.13, thus meaning that catalyst support for 1.14 could be aeons away...
