Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Feel free.
BTW 4K playback on my 1440p monitor is dropping frames on vaapi - I dunno if it's because of the underscalling. xv works perfectly fluid, i didn't check xbmc - maybe it's worth a shot using new fglrx vaapi acceleration (mentioned here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1483404 just note problems with subtitles), hell - even with xvba wrapper its worth a shot.

I have dual Radeon HD 7870s if that makes any difference.

I'm seeing similar issues, Xorg has 2541M RSS after ~10h of uptime. I don't know what's causing the allocs, it doesn't seem to grow continually, but rather in steps.

Using dual head output on a 5850, catalyst 14.12, xorg 1.16, Xfce desktop. Haven't really run anything besides Exaile, some terminals and Chrome.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to debug this? I might try linking Xorg to dmalloc and check whether that's of any use.

On my AMD Radeon 6480G (mobile APU) with Catalyst 14.12, I once had a memory leak from X.org of nearly 2GB RAM after about 8 hours of uptime, but I've not been able to replicate it since. Web browsing, study, a little bit of anime and CS:GO was what I did, but I've done that everyday since getting back to university and I only had the RAM leak once...

Ok then here goes!

I am running a 27" Dell P2715Q 4K Ultra HD monitor through a Radeon R9 290 over DisplayPort. I also output to a Sony 40" tv via DVI to HDMI at 1080p.  My cpu is an Athlon II X4 630 with 8Gb 1600 DDR3.

I was expecting the R9 290 to easily give me 4K video playback but when playing Big Buck Bunny (bbb_sunflower_2160p_30fps_normal.mp4) using mplayer (mplayer -vo vaapi:gl bbb_sunflower_2160p_30fps_normal.mp4) the playback is stuttering and far from smooth.  I thought the R9 would need to turn on the power and so expected the fan to speed up but nothing happened.

Here is the mplayer output.....

- Slow video output
  - Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
  - Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
    e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
- Broken file
  - Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)

- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
  - Try -nocache.

When I played a 1080p video with the same settings the R9 did respond by speeding up the fan and making some noise.  Why doesn't the R9 adapt its processing power to meet my 4K needs?

Having played the video using  the command 'mplayer  bbb_sunflower_2160p_30fps_normal.mp4' it seems to be just the same so I must be missing some gfx acceleration somewhere.

I thought my CPU should be able to cope with playing a video.

Please go easy with me... this is my first experience of Radeon and 4K!

Simon.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hey,

How can I tell if the catalsyt drivers are using the right graphics card for my computer? Whenever I run fgl_glxgears, I usually get 60fps, but if I change the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable, it seems use the discrete card since my fps balloons. This is kinda confirmed since this only happens when I have aticonfig to uuse the discrete card it has a substantially higher fps. If I use the aticonfig to use the intel card its the samefps as usually. I'd like to set this up right so that my 3d applications actually use the ATI card and not the integrated card.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I've run Xorg with heaptrack attached in an attempt to debug my memory leak issues.

718.03MB leaked over 1851097 calls from
0x7f09be3d35c3
  in /usr/lib64/dri/fglrx_dri.so

Unsurprisingly, it's due to Catalyst. I don't know why that particular call doesn't have a backtrace though.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

GDM still does not work for me and the whole GNOME does not as well. I have decided not to investigate it anymore. Yes, GNOME is cool, nice and full of awesome features, but it works terrible. Terrible backward compatibility and it is basically a clusterfuck of bugs. I am not even able to make it work on several other machines, no matter which driver or brand of GPU they run. I really enjoyed using it, but it is getting worse and worse from update to update.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi, guys.
I'm not shure that my trouble is with catalist driver, but may be you can help me with that.
I use catalist-pxp driver on my laptop.
After last -Syu cursor is disappear (i can use it but can't see) when I use amd graphics (ok on intel)
Also when I connect to TV via HDMI and just clone screen with xrandr, I see cursor on TV, but not in laptop display.
What is wrong?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I also have a problem with a dual-screen setup, under KDE (main monitor via DVI-HDMI, the other via HDMI-HDMI -for playing movies with Kodi mostly-). When upgrading to Catalyst 14.12, I cannot use both monitors at the same time; they remain in an "out of signal" state. If I unplug the HDMI-HDMI one, then the main monitor recovers the signal and I can work with it normally, but it is far from ideal. This problem can be reverted with the Catalyst 14.9 version, but I upgraded the linux kernel to 3.18 so I'm stuck (I don't have the previous version in the cache). Do you know a workaround to this inconvenience?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

sorry, have been pretty busy latelly, will look at earlier posts later, but anyway i've preapred 14.9 with initial 3.19 support (i used kolasa's patch), you can find it here: http://catalyst.wirephire.com/tarball/c … src.tar.gz
i've finally uploaded amdtfset (Small command-line utility to set and query the tear free desktop option present in the AMD Catalyst) package that can be usefull: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/amdtfset-git/
(edit this pkg is also available @ [catalyst] repo atm)

as for the vaapi: what if you will run mplayer with additional -va vaapi option?

The first time I ran  this command I got FHD (1/4 screen windowed output) but still staggering/stuttering.  When repeating the command an FHD window appears with solid black output and the errors as in the code above.

I have had lots of window errors (flickering or showing solid blue/black etc) when using chrome browser since switching to Radeon/4k.

I  do hope I have not wasted the best part of £240 by switching to AMD/ATI/Radeon to power my 4k monitor. At the moment I am very concerned that I have make a big mistake.

Thanks again for the help,

I have updated to 14.12 and rebooted.  This is now the output from mplayer....

The output appeared 4K but windowed. I made it fullscreen but the playback was still stalling and very slow/jerky.

I have noticed that the first second seems full speed (the butterflies wings seem to flap fast and then slow down) but the rest is slow.

Do you think my my cpu should be able to deliver the video to the graphics card quickly enough?  By the way I am now running 16GB 1600Mhz CAS9 memory (2x8GB).

I am guessing this have more to do with the 4K resolution than my cpu/gpu as no errors are shown when running 1920x1080p with the same mplayer command and options.

After trying several attempts at playing this again with mplayer -va vaapi:gl -ni bbb_sunflower_2160p_30fps_normal.mp4

i've finally uploaded amdtfset (Small command-line utility to set and query the tear free desktop option present in the AMD Catalyst) package that can be usefull: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/amdtfset-git/
(edit this pkg is also available @ [catalyst] repo atm)

as for the vaapi: what if you will run mplayer with additional -va vaapi option?

Thank you very much! After installing catalyst-test-14.9-12 my dual-screen setup works as expected again. I guess I have to remain in 14.9 for the time being and hold back the urge to upgrade wink., Keep up the good work.

@diesel1:
I meant `mplayer -vo vaapi -va vaapi` or `mplayer -vo vaapi:gl -va vaapi`. What about those?
Also the fact that you are somehow forcing vdpau codecs is kinda exotic to me, could you turn it off?

yep :-) if you are interested in rc kernels I could try to update pkgs earlier with initial support. Right now also catalyst-hook 14.12-2 @ [catalyst] has 3.19 support.

You don't have to rush rc kernel support in as soon as you can, as I have my hands pretty full with the kernels I maintain in the AUR and I rarely get a chance to play with rc kernels. Things are a little quieter at the moment for me because my buddy for testing my AUR packages is currently making some amends to the lts kernels.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I also have problems when playing this file (more preciselly i picked up 60fps version) on mplayer, no matter what va or vo i picked up its always dropping some frames. Same on vlc.
But it does play well on chromium and kodi (with vaapi acceleration enabled). Did you check kodi (xbmc in old days)?

Thanks for the info Vi0L0. I did try both videos in kodi but the results were very similar to mplayer except in kodi  the sound stopped and started as the video played (smoothly but in slow motion).

Having looked at the output from mplayer and comparing to playing the BBB 1080p version I am wondering if the problem is something to do with the 4k resolution or scaling.

I have turned on hardware scaling in amdcccle but that doesn't change anything.

*EDIT*
I downloaded several 4K clips from here http://box.houkouonchi.jp/4k/, in several different formats.  Initially I thought these were playing fine in google-chrome but the sound began to stutter and I noticed slight stalling in the video too. different formats seem to break after different periods of time.  I also tried these in kodi with similar results. Mplayer still shows the same issues.

I tried the file ses.astra.ultrahd.demo.2160p.uhdtv.internal-ifh, from the link above, in vlc and it worked perfectly.  No stuttering or sound issues.  Hooray! something works! Now to solve the other issues. big_smile

You mean plasma-workspace 5.2? It works pretty well here on opengl 3.1 _after_ relogin.
Thought this whole environement is very unstable, almost like kde 4.0... too bad i kinda like how does breeze look.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Well since updating yesterday (2015-01-27) and now using LXDM and Cinnamon desktop (I was using KDM and KDE 4) all but one of the videos play using VLC.  When playing in Mplayer or Kodi I am still getting slow, juddering playback.

Hi there I am the original poster that clfarron4 mentioned. I'm not really sure what setup or packages I should install. I tried the powerexpress method suggested on the wiki page, but it is more tailored to intel/amd (hybrid) configurations. I am now running a new install with the open source drivers and would like to know in which direction i should go in.

I don't particularly want to start something that will end up with me having to re-install arch(I know i could have probably fixed the original issue but ended up getting frustrated and thought that starting again would be best.)

Also I found this thread which is related and asked the OP some questions. [link]https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1498257[/link]

Thank you in advance.
